war nerd has a good column about how military androids would be the perfect counterinsurgency force because the only way the insurgents win is by turning the populace against the occupying power, and robots can repair roads, provide security, etc, but don't feel hatred for the locals, don't rape, don't steal, don't snap from stress, don't seek revenge for a destroyed unit. but really, large-scale economical production of humanoid robots that can autonomously differentiate between and kill targets and do utility and roadwork is decades off at least. but what about if instead of medicating humans after they return from war, we do so beforehand? temporarily wiping away the ability for humans to feel strong emotions is within our grasp today, and removing the capacity for rebellious thought is more plausible than legions of competent androids. that's basically what they're trying to do with the guy with the 21 pill bottles, just in a very scattershot and inefficient manner

isn't that 2nd part WW3 in the star trek TNG lore

also a generally common sci-fi concept. so it'll likely happen pretty soon.

Battlestar Galactica also injected the idea of dosing military members, they were just stimulants to stay awake.

the military also sells their own brand of energy drink which desensitizes people to the concept.

i tried it once.

however, they're eager for the final push into deadening emotion or heightening hostility. what's great is the vitriolic disdain for opium and marijuana as they are both aggression inhibitors

i cannot fucking stand this injustice towards noemp (non empathetic individuals) like myself and chris Kyle. when I was 7 i crushed a bug. the next day I bumped my friend when he was peeing at the trough so his dick touched the trough and he got water on his gym shorts. we will not be trifled with. inhuman? No. Powerful. Hell Yes

That would be more accurate and less insulting to Russians than it actually was though.

How so?
I saw the movie pre-lf, & remembere liking it...

It was pretty poorly received in Russia, mainly thanks to the orientalist depiction of the Red Army. It's unclear to what extent such things like blocking detachments and pointless suicide charges happened, but I think it's safe to say the depiction in EatG is way overblown when actual veterans of the battle wanted it banned. Imagine if SPR got that response. I've read the eponymous William Craig book and don't remember any of that shit.

And the meme lives on in vidya like Call of Duty and Bloodlands: The Game. Now we have a generation raised on this tripe. damn now I'm mad *goes super-Stalin*

I don't understand how people are hating on this movie! What do these idiots think war is? It's a kill or be killed environment over there. Maybe those who think this movie was a waste of time should realize just how many American lives this man saved as a sniper. I find this movie one of the most inspirational films I have ever seen. I just cannot stand the disrespect this movie is getting. All of the haters are pretty much bullying a man about a career in which he committed himself to to help them continue to be free. The real man behind this story, Chris Kyle, is truly an American hero.

i always thought it was just for top secret clearance, but nope, you have trouble getting into the military at all if you have outstanding unpaid debt, which is funny because it's another nail in the "abloo they are poor" coffin. how many poor people do you know with great credit

lol surely you won't be able to settle or pay off this debt with the guaranteed income employment with the military will provide.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/american-sniper-chris-kyles-alleged-killer-set-go-trial-n299766

The sequel to "American Sniper" is about to begin.

Jury selection will get underway Thursday in the trial of the man accused of gunning down Chris Kyle at a Texas shooting range.

Attorneys for alleged killer Eddie Ray Routh tried unsuccessfully to delay and move the trial. They said Kyle is just too popular in Erath County, population just under 38,000.

"American Sniper" has grossed nearly $250 million and has been nominated for six Oscars, including best picture and best actor for star Bradley Cooper. Kyle's autobiography of the same name has sold millions of copies. Texas Governor Greg Abbott also proclaimed February 2 "Chris Kyle Day."

The trial will be held in Stephenville, Texas, where the local courthouse typically sends out 175 jury duty notices before a criminal trial. This time, they delivered 800 notices.

Among the questions Judge Jason Cashon will ask potential jurors on Thursday and Friday: "Did you see the movie 'American Sniper'?" An affirmative answer alone will not disqualify potential jurors.

Attorneys will narrow the pool down to 12 jurors and two alternates on Monday and Tuesday. Opening statements are due to be given next Wednesday. The trial is expected to last at least two weeks.

Kyle become American's deadliest sniper during four tours of duty in Iraq. Insurgents put a bounty on his head, nicknaming him the "Devil of Ramadi."

However, Kyle struggled to adapt to civilian life but found strength in sharing his skills and serving other veterans.

Kyle started his own company, Craft International, which provided tactical training to law enforcement and military personnel. He also helped found FITCO Cares, a non-profit group that helped veterans stay in shape.

He was fatally shot at Rough Creek Lodge, a shooting range 90 miles southwest of Dallas, on Feb. 2, 2013. Fellow Iraq veteran Chad Littlefield was also killed.

Routh's attorneys said their client will plead not guilty by reason of insanity. Prosecutors said they will ask for life without parole, instead of the death penalty.

two days of jury selection on a trial with this much publicity is absurd

of course, charging the man who ended chris kyles unabated streak of crimes against humanity with murder is much more absurd

it'll be a funny trial, because the defense is saying that routh acted irrationally and without actual volition due to his illness, while the state is saying it was an intentional criminal act, which means they'll probably want to offer the jury a motive, the most obvious of which will be "routh, who was affected in a profoundly negative manner by his military experiences, acted against this archtype of Troop out of malice thereof"

or, if you google routh half the first page is rightist propaganda mills arguing he's a secret muslim so maybe they'll go with that. either way though the state will be arguing against it being some kind of random symptom of a fundamentally irrational illness (the primary media framing) and in favor of it being a basically political act

"criminal" and "mentally ill" are the same diagnosis. the state and media are aligned. if routh's attorneys were ethical and actually took xher side they would drop the case, they would release a press statement saying, "let the State supply its own lawyers, who are paid to pretend that Routh is a criminal who needs defending, and not a hero who killed one of the most vile participants of modern imperialist invasions" and so forth.
