Gunman kills 3, wounds 16 at Fort Hood Army base

The soldier who allegedly went on a deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood today was identified as Spc. Ivan Lopez, according to law enforcement officials.

The alleged shooter was on medication, was receiving treatment for depression and anxiety, and was being evaluated for possible post-traumatic stress disorder, Milley added.

"There are reports that he self-reported a traumatic brain injury."

hmm thatd explain his enlistment

apparently shooting people on an army base is such a rational act that the news reports have to fall all over themselves to emphasize that this guy was suffering from mental illness

reminder that the modern us military is the most ethical and humane major army probably in all of human history, taking unprecedented steps to reduce civilian casualties in all its operations, building rapport and connections with local people in those countries where it maintains a presence, and working extensively in aid and development projects. obviously any situation in which nervous armed young men are a major factor will have some tragic and regrettable results but it's a testament to the strong institutional ethos of the us military that such incidents have been reduced to a level entirely unknown to previous great powers. where warfare was once conducted almost entirely through sadistic massacres and mass rape, the united states army carries out its operations abroad with precision, conscientiousness, and humility. god bless the us armed forces and all those who serve in them

my favorite part of this story is how a psychotic, military-trained killer and enforcer of the US governments will killing somebody with a gun is proof that we all need to turn our guns over to psychotic military-trained killers and enforcers of the US governments will. for safety

In wars where the security of the United States isn't at stake, and where they are clearly the superior force, they do nobly try to avoid civilian casualties, at least as a matter of doctrine. Bunny is going to wanna do the whole village, but they don't have genocide practicums at West Point.

But praising them for it is like praising the Harlem Globetrotters for not drawing any technical fouls.

To hear incorrect views without rebutting them and even to hear counter-revolutionary remarks without reporting them, but instead to take them calmly as if nothing had happened. This is a sixth type.

Impper made an interesting point about the Troops and mass murder a couple years ago:

one of the problems people have today (as opposed to even vietnam with the 1970s) is that the military has evolved to engage in a very neoliberal style of mass murder, that is, only very rarely does the us military hack people up and shoot into crowds and openly bomb civilians helplessly standing in the open; rather everybody is killed through regime destabilization, infrastructure destruction, arms funneling, colonial gamesmanship, and so on, and every time civilians are outright killed we "apologize" for it or "investigate it." as abstract as warmaking is these days, this serves almost entirely to remove all the moral ambiguousness in the mind of an unsuspecting and frankly stupid public. just compare it to vietnam when they were firebombing the countryside and bragging about executing entire villages, it's not much like that these days, and when it is it's at least rare enough to be able to use the bad apples defense

personally i think the US engaged in a lot of Vietnam-style tactics in Iraq and is currently doing the same in Afghanistan. we just never hear about it.

but overall Impper's point stands when applied to proxy conflicts like Libya & Syria and the divide-and-conquer bullshit that created the sectarian bloodshed in Iraq.

so what exactly do you propose be done? should the united states immediately abolish its armed forces? should we leave global security up to the whims of russia and iran, and just hope the ensuing free-for-all doesn't leave millions of bodies in its wake? should it leave impoverished communities across the country without a means of gaining discipline, advancement, and respectability? you can oppose the troops all you like but if you don't have a better suggestion for how the us government should defend its interests your moralising is basically useless
