this is weird because i was told that the military teaches discipline but apparently that discipline evaporates the moment a psychopath isn't screaming directions at you every waking moment of your life

though i can kind of imagine the difficulty a Soldier has on a modern american college campus. how many of them stumbled out of a class in a fog of uncomprehending anger after someone in the class criticized them for saying that Oscar Wilde was kind of a faggot

bad example. if you go into a college class wearing old fatigues and a crew cut and say that oscar wilde was kind of a faggot the professor will assume you are a radical lesbian and give you an A+.

The Department of Defense paid sports teams $6.8 million in last 4 years to convince them to honor veterans at games http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/defense-military-tributes-professional-sports_5639a04ce4b0411d306eda5e

i was laughing at the military being exposed for paying for their own adulation as part of the project to brainwash america into troop worship but unfortunately the joke is on me cuz most people are already so thoroughly fucked that the general reaction seems to be "shame on those sports teams for making the military pay"

yeah i love it when a couple of fighters zoom over a stadium and everybody loses their goddamn minds cheering. if that was at the beginning of a work of fiction it'd be establishing that this world is deeply disturbed

the entire existing american entertainment industry is built on regulatory failures that are vigorously promoted by politicians and would collapse if they, for example, made a bunch of movies about reality. bu today i saw the steve jobs movie and i actually liked it a lot except for some of the crass sorkinisms and it is pretty much as straightforward as possible that he's a mental case and that business logic is nuts but it's still within the framework of 'you can't make a true antiwar film' for the same reason why traders love gordon gekko. someone told me yesterday that facebook employees watch 'the social network' to get excited about working for the company.

there's a weird magic to protagonism where we identify with the protagonist no matter what a piece of shit he is, particularly if he has a strong personality. i assume it's some primate instinct misfiring. we have to empathize with someone we spend a lot of time with, someone who we see struggle.

walter white is a good example. people still defend him saying He Had to Take Care of His Fambly. except he didn't. in episode like 3 a rich friend offers to pay for his treatment and make sure his family was OK, but White turned it down because he's a bitter pompous asshole. to have a friend so rich that he could pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to bail you out easily is a very rare thing, but it's implemented here deliberately to make a point that comes up repeatedly: walter white isn't forced to be evil, he chooses it because it makes his ego feel good. the show said it. the creator said it. walter white said it. but people still don't get it. But He Needed Chemo Money :'(
#53
Actually, he was correct to reject his bourgeois friend's charity. Medical care should not rely on the whim of a rich benefactor. It should be a right. If the system denies you this right, you are justified in rebelling against the system by cooking blue meth and murdering those who stand in your way.

once again we see socialism strangles small business and the entrepreneurial spirit

Why's Walt always so mean to Jessie
#56
Because Jessie is a weak-willed cryhard who doesn't have the stomach for revolutionary violence, and whom is constantly compromising Walt's efforts with his fuckups. Of course, Walt, despite his hardened exterior, retains an altruistic soft spot for Jesse and never gives him the full "Christopher" treatment he so richly deserves.

the new way to spell: try to get close enough to "entrepreneurial" that your spellchecker can guess what you're trying at
#58
they're also designed and presented that way. compare the british and US versions of house of cards. in the british one there's a lot more nastiness and the possibility of identification with some of the victims but in the US that's all gone

There, but for grace of God, go I...

The difference between the first video and second is the difference between an army over-represented by the type of disaffected male neurotics who would volunteer to go kill people thousands of miles just to "do something" with their lives, and one that included a substantial number of draftees representing a broad cross-section of the general population.

i bet theres just as many sociopathic vietnam vets, the only reason this guy filters through is vietnam is one of the few wars americans are allowed to be "critical" of. would we see footage of a similar veteran questioning his role in Kosovo...; ? probably not.

check out this socipathic response from a vietnam vet in the comments:

"i'm a vietnam vet 3 tours, I worked with Vets with PTSD for a number of years outside of three who have a stutter no one talks like that. The Nam was about halting the expansion of communism."

not totally discounting the idea that the US military is better at inculcating Our Troops these days, but it'd have to been shown through their actual ideological techniques/training etc rather than looking at a couple isolated responses.
