maoist planning was pretty decentralized. only about 600 commodities were controlled on their price, while in the ussr you had about 60,000. arguably current Chinese planning is more centralized.

as for market socialism, the dprk had a higher gdp per capita than China in the 70s-90s. now chinese gdp per capita is 4x dprk's (and 25% higher than dprk's historical peak).

remember that the USSR's black market economy was one of the biggest contributions to its overthrow. that is probably one of the biggest reasons why the remaining socialist states have legalized the black market and put it under state control, in the present period of imperial dominance

has anyone ever counted how many separate commodities are either price controlled or subsidized in, say, the us? be surprised if it was much less than 600

yeah price control is another one of those things that the US/other western imperialists have an outrageous double standard about. in the Empire it just happens all the time and no one cares, when a rival political entity does it it is the freedom strangling road to damnation and chaos. this hypocrisy even extends to economic relations within empire, the US flagrantly picks and chooses for example which regulations of NAFTA will apply to it at any given moment while ruthlessly enforcing them on its neighbors in the same breath

susan woodward's book "socialist unemployment" is more focused on its eventual failure than anything but she has a weird and interesting argument
