i figured out what was stopping me from reading a lot over the past few years. when i reached a bit in a book that was uninteresting i would put it down and then do something else because i felt like i had to read carefully cover to cover. recently i decided to start skimming parts that were tedious or irrelevant to my interests. boy howdy did that ever work. i still read the majority of the book carefully but if it bogs down i just skim a bit. this sounds obvious but yeah. good times.

reading is not supposed to be fun, it is a responsibility to the revolution. maybe you should purge yourself of such bourgeois fancies like "fun" reading or literature removed from the class struggle and you'll be motivated to read the whole book.

In education one is dealing with children in whom one has to inculcate certain habits of diligence, precision, poise (even physical poise), ability to concentrate on specific subjects, which cannot be acquired without the mechanical repetition of disciplined and methodical acts. Would a scholar at the age of forty be able to sit for sixteen hours on end at his work-table if he had not, as a child, compulsorily, through mechanical coercion, acquired the appropriate psycho-physical habits? If one wishes to produce great scholars, one still has to start at this point and apply pressure throughout the educational system in order to succeed in creating those thousands or hundreds or even only dozens of scholars of the highest quality which are necessary to every civilisation.

baby huey, you are antagonistic where no contradiction exists between us! anyway i am way more mental/anal about this than you might imagine. i have a very structured idea about what i am intending to learn over the medium term (at least in terms of critical theory and political economy).

the best way to learn linear algebra is to find a decent book and do literally every problem in it

i've always had a sense that if i did something for a career that i'd eventually take on all the ideas of that career or be rejected and spit out for deviance. i also tend to think it's a waste of time to learn things just to conform to career expectations. but the problem is now i just know a lot about bad arguments people make about politics but i don't actually have any skills to change anything or make money to live. but these aren't very productive sorts of beliefs i guess. like why not just become a social researcher or something instead of pretending i have to write a thesis defending marxism-leninism.

why not do something really bad and go to jail, then you can write all you like. it worked for gramsci
