As long as it doesn't detract from the thread's main points sure I can talk a bit about it. All stories begin with "well I was really drunk" and this one is no exception. I was with a friend at the little bar/restaurant across from our hostel (Friendly's in Malate if you ever decide to go to Manila) which attracted all the expat slime and the prostitutes and beggars that stick to them. I was too lazy to go somewhere nice, plus it was cheap and I was with a friend who was a total sleazeball and fit right in. Anyway he started hitting on this girl who was clearly not into him. I have nothing against prostitution but I was trying to avoid it, and I took the fact that she was picky as a sign against her being a prostitute.

Long story short we went to her place and she was like "hey can you give the owner 500 pesos to spend the night" which didn't seem odd to my drunken brain. Maybe it was like a dorm or something and you had to bribe the landlord, or maybe it was like a hotel. Looking back it was most likely a prostitute, and I got some kind of infection the next day on my knee and 2 toes which freaked me the fuck out. I used protection and got tested and I'm clean, and I also had a few more girls while I was there but that was my close call with a prostitute in the Philippines. The End.

sexual relationships founded on genuine mutual respect and without the harmful underpinnings of patriarchy and all that are certainly possible but i really doubt one night stands fit this criteria

I didn't actively seek out prostitution but obviously any sexual interaction is going to have unequal power relations and probably be exploitative. Guess I should have sat it my room and cried though, that's what LF does
