no, you just need to practice listening better to others and not coming off sounding like a complete dick. ganbatte, boourns-kun

Go into a video game like gta online & just start talking about the nature of capitalism & the need for change

You can basically educate children on Marxism all the time if you are good at talking.

i dunno, sounds like some 'to catch a predator' shit, and anyway it's more fun to tell the kids on there their parents are going to get arrested for letting them play an M-rated game

keven's right... he's right aobut dark souls

Demon's souls is cool & i intend to play the other souls games once i finish it

i don't know if this is really true though. every time some new technology comes along people are afraid that it's going to turn us all into drooling idiots. i don't think tvs, radios, or the internet turned us into vegetables, it just opened up different ways to perceive the world. and like any tool it can and will be abused

In my experience real life conservatives & apolitical types are very receptive to what I'm saying about the problems of capitalism, as opposed to internet Leftists who as far as I can tell value circle high-fiving each other & dissing normies than actually growing any sort of real movement beyond their circles

Idk tho, I gave up the fukboi life & am trying to live ethically whilst studying Marxism & trying to combat liberalism. Apparently you have to be far more edgy than I can be & have a verified IQ above 80 which I don't in order to resist capitalist hegemony.

wtf..

Man when I was a child and did the hilarious bit where I'd do like a remote at someone and say BOOooooop like I'm turning them off I didn't realize I was actually displaying my crippling inability to engage with the world due to technological stunting.

Today I display my crippling inability to interact with the world mostly through
1. Web forum posts
2. Twitter tweets
3. Facebook status updates

if you can remember what it was like to see what was on tv when you were a kid, though, it was a big deal. the news definitely felt like (and feels still to most people?) as this is literally what is happening, everything here is real and as serious as a heart attack. and tv isn't even an interactive tactile experience. the way I see TVs vs how my grandmother saw them is probably very different.

how would you individually anecdotally know, anyway, whether or not internet/tv/radio/etc fucked you up? of course you're going to claim that you'd be the same asshole either way. you'll never know.

This is like the core of the dialectical materialist process.... yea of course we're shaped by our constructed environments, but the argument that a child is "fucked up" and permanently unable to distinguish reality from an iPad because they do iPad motions is nonsense alarmism. Rather, the "iPad framework" is part of their idea vocabulary, in the same way that we relate to television or cars.
#92
Who's that guy who did the article about how there's no new ideas, we just apply the old frameworks to new technologies
#93
on the one hand i think new forms of media cannot change the shape of the real world in any drastic way.

on the other hand we have anime nazis who go to rallies pretending to be in a video game.

video games don't hurt people but they don't help people that need help 's all im saying.

perhaps if every person who was thinking of gassing jews had to platinum Bloodborne they'd really start to empathize with others.

yes well i would hope it goes without saying that when speaking to youth you should always conduct yourselves in a respectable manner, even if it means sharing the Good News out by the arcade center

you're right though, it's generaly speaking not a good idea to talk to kids about politics unless you have some sort of proper experience or whatever

Dark souls 3 kind of sucks and I havent played the DLC and probably wont.

ive been following a bunch of interesting writing around people making money thru twitch and being watched and performing for etc, i guess that's easier to call out because it looks like pornography (performing, revealing, hiding for others). but since i TA for a games class i'd be really interested if any of you've come across like a definitive article that i can make my undergrads read on class critique of video games. the representation and identity politics stuff is non controversial now.

slightly unrelated - natasha dow schull's book on addiction by design is a good general read
#108
no who writes about videogames has anything intelligent to say but also the representation and identity politics stuff is the main vehicle through which nearly every game of the past five years has delivered its anti-communist politics. see the most recent deus ex for the worst/best possible example
#109
actually heres one blog post i like that mentions the word class but its more to do with gaming subcultures and not really about the project of like, examining a specific text and teasing out one kind of "message" or another

http://pattheflip.tumblr.com/post/54414358578/why-im-pissed-off-about-this-noel-brown-shit

edit: https://killscreen.com/articles/the-perverse-ideology-of-the-division/

killscreen got a ton of shit for running this article from both sides of the videogame culture war that shall not be named whcih is probably why you dont see this sort of thing very often. note that village idiot brianna wu named the division her game of the year because of its diversity and representation and she wasnt alone

BRIANNA WU IS VILLAGE IDIOT YES! who's your fav genuinely funny woman comedian? dont say hillary and i am not misogynist i really want to watch someone who is not sara silver or amy whatever or anyone on ari shaffirs friend list
#111
we had katie salen talk in class today, it's incredible how wanting to study games or gamers esp for education barely gets problematized but also gets funded by the shitloads, remember when they wanted to gamify education with badges? ugh

i did like this game called machinarium and osmosis and that goop game

Hitlery.

all woman comedians are funny because all woman comedians are good

maria bamford is funny and narrowly edges out singing anamatronic bass, white rappers, and seasonal affective disorder as minnesotas greatest cultural export
#115
there's a bridget christie special on netflix right now and she is just amazing
#116
julia davis and amy sedaris are probably the two funniest women alive but they're actors, not standups. maria bamford is an incredibly irritating caricature of the DSM-5 and you'd have to at least be american to appreciate her, sorry kamelred
#117
yeah i heard a lot about maria bamford too but she is ari shaffir's friend plus i couldnt enjoy the mental illness humor after like 2 minutes.

pokemongo to the polls was really the best joke of last year
#118
what'd ari shaffir do
#119
well he wasnt funny to begin with, prolly worth half a laugh about that amazing racist shit then i recently found out he's actually made a career as a comic and does this show on comedy central where he invites his friends or known comics to do short pieces. most of them have been awful but also generally shaffir has profited off awful humor.

kaitlin olson has a new show and its pretty good, not mindblowing or anything, but it has cemented my opinion that she's the best physical comedian alive
