somebody posted something in this thread comparing to BDSM to heroin. I would like to point out that that heroin is better than BDSM (believe it or not), because at least with heroin you are primarily hurting yourself, whereas with BDSM you are primarily hurting unknown third parties.

also i don't really know what BDSM means.

also discipline could you please use a different word other than 'john'? some people might find that term, in that context, unnecessarily derogatory.

heroin hurts snot boogie, snoop and poot. just say no.

This year the Theorizing the Web conference (which is unofficially affiliated with The New Inquiry, a crowd that includes a lot of people who also work for Vice), featured Stoya at its plenary discussion. She also had a piece in TNI's last issue. This is someone who was made into a celebrity really not long ago, in a very visible process where the porn industry put her forward for the sake of assuaging a certain consumer market that might be inclined to guilt about porn. There is literally no reason the porn industry would have advertised her so much except to sell porn. And she was advertised and made into this icon not just as someone who loves her job but as someone really gosh-darn articulate, who really gets it, who isn't just this bimbo but is smart and educated like me. In other words it's aimed at a particular demographic that would find that act appealing, so who is that, well it's these sort of soft-theory heads and others who've been vaguely convinced there's something fucked up about porn but that maybe it's okay if the participants are okay with it. So then we have Stoya, who is not dumb or anything but she is not notably thoughtful, interesting, or insightful; I mean if it weren't for the porn career none of this stuff would get published, so it's very clearly the image of this person saying this stuff that grounds the appeal. She has been positioned to fill this very specific and new niche.

And then you have these supposed leftists, this supposed vanguard of critical theory, that is so titillated by the idea of positioning itself at the forefront of revolutionary sexuality and nonjudgementalism that they can't be bothered to think about any of this stuff about how images are manipulated and propagated, and instead eagerly skip along with it in order to take a cut of the koolness kred.

Like in TNI it was "10 Amazing Sex Tips" and the joke was that they were all cracks about how dumb Cosmo tips are, but they were also actually sex tips. So the magazine gets to cash in on the salacious draw of "sex tips (and from a porn star!)" format but pretend that's what they're not doing with this saran-wrap veneer of knowingness and satire.

In the last game of thrones episode they apparently changed one of the sex scenes in the books from 'consensual' to outright rape. and the clickbait-blog-o-sphere is up in arms because how dare they change creepy fat man GRRM's books to be misogynist and watching rape makes people uncomfortable.

meanwhile theres a scene in the same ep where a bunch of women have been captured on the wall that protects the world and the good guy general casually walks down a line of them and says "rape" "slit her throat" or "rape and slit her throat" and no one has made a protest

Uhh this didn't happen lol. There's a scene that's passingly similar but basically everything here is incorrect, a guy walks with a woman through a crowd of Night's Watch brothers pointing out the crimes that they committed, "Raper, raper, slit a man's throat, raper", to explain why she probably doesn't want to stay at the Wall with her newborn child. He's also not a general, he's just some fat kid that joined like a month ago. You'd basically have to be outright retarded to misunderstand that scene so completely.

ok here's an example. one of my closest friends and confidantes is an extremely vocal and outspoken feminist and communist, active in campaigns against the exploitation of womens bodies both in pornified mass-media and third-world labour practices. she is also extremely into bdsm, particularly playing a submissive role with a male partner, and extreme pornography (including choke porn). naturally this provokes an ethical dilemma, as her political engagements and sexual desires appear to be oppositely articulated - but does this mean that her enjoyment is invalidated, that it's somehow false or conditioned by patriarchy, and that she should give it up? i don't know the answers to this but it's an important question

an article posted here in the last few months talked about how rape victims will often go on to have rape fantasies, and many will never have sex again without remembering the rape, in this way the rape is more significant than a mere physical assault as the woman really is forced to "enjoy" rape as it is forever bound with her sexuality. by which i mean, your friend is probably returning to the familiar with bdsm, and it probably comes from some early event in her sexual history, like, i don't know, being exposed to hardcore bdsm pornography at a young age

lol this is some terrible psedofreudianism

even freud accepted early in his career the obvious widespread effects of abuse in children tho he stupidly rejected it afterwards http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Assault_on_Truth

Masson makes available previously unpublished letters from Freud's closest friend, Wilhelm Fliess, which reveal that Freud had grave doubts about abandoning the "seduction theory." Masson discovered that not only had Freud read the contemporary literature documenting the high incidence of sexual abuse of children, he had in all likelihood witnessed autopsies of children who had been raped and murdered. That Freud abandoned his seduction theory, Masson argues, was a failure of courage rather than a clinical or theoretical insight.

As a result, most psychiatrists and psychoanalysts have in effect been reluctant to trust the memories of their patients, women in particular, about the traumas they experienced in childhood. Like Freud, they see such traumas as fantasy rather than reality.

wasnt it also that he wouldnt be paid by these rapist fathers and so on to keep analysing their traumatised daughters

the least personal story about porn I feel like sharing is the one where I was a freshman in high school and hung out in a group that was more male than female. and the guys sometimes used to watch porn when we all hung out together. not just any porn, but really violent gonzo porn. the kind that high schoolers would get a kick out of for the gross factor, like faces of death. and they'd sit there and laugh and we girls would sort of nervously laugh along with them. we'd watch women throwing up while giving deep throat, we'd watch women get cum in their eye, we'd watch men slap women in the face with their hands and erections. we'd watch women getting foreign objects painfully inserted into their bodies. we'd watch women cry and say please and men call them degrading names. we watched men penetrate women dressed up like little girls who called them daddy. and the guys would laugh and say "oh man!" and we girls would sit there and basically get terrorized. sometimes, when something was really gross they would trick us into coming over to the computer screen and then wrestle us, trying to make us watch while they laughed. and we would laugh too, and say, "oh how gross." we were just fifteen and nobody knew better, we just wanted to be liked at that age.

we were being indoctrinated. and I guess these guys were learning something a little different. when they weren't forcing our faces into max hardcore shorts they could also speak of how intelligent and beautiful famous porn actresses were. they would talk about which ones they liked, which scenes they appreciated. it was like trading baseball cards.

playboy bunny t-shirts, girls gone wild commercials, bikini waxes - I grew up seeing all of this and I assume you did too. it teaches you about the value of women in our society. girls are fair game - offended, they are told to lighten up. I've never seen or heard of a straight man being told to lighten up after getting an unwanted, unexpected sexual pass from another man. all the women I know have a porn story to tell. don't even get me started on lesbians. and if you can't see how porn is like, a super horrific and oppressive thing to all women and girls, I don't know what to tell you. and if you can't share those kinds of experiences with women and girls then don't patronize them and try to have a little empathy. you don't have the same skin in the game. your position of power in society is built on the bones of these women. try and listen instead of figuring out ways to make them tell you it's okay to legalize widespread rape and sale of women, choke your girlfriend in bed or watch (even so-called feminist) porn. thanks in advance.

it makes me realise how odd my teenage years were given anything remotely resembling this was entirely absent

ever noticed how capitalism uses the imagery of socialist revolution to sell products and how patriarchy uses the buzzwords of liberatory feminism to oppress women? this is because the best way to claim victory over something is to integrate its insignia into your own, denuded of any real power or associations. its the same phenomenon as a roman general who beat a tribe of germans calling himself germanicus, or the british empire building palaces in brighton in the style of indian mosques. basically what i'm trying to say is that the gender egalitarian socialist future will be a non-stop orgy of relentless bdsm power play

Also the fact that the anti-prostitution position empowers abusive law enforcement as well as the pseudoscience and bogus statistics they bandy about (Sex with a hundred men a night, average starting age is 13, the Super Bowl is a hotbed for sex trafficking) as well as the neoliberal imperialism within the movement.
