A formative experience for me was reading the novel Dune. As a kid the descriptions of the Fremen and their customs really appealed to me for some reason. I carried their values with me and lived by their code of honor. Later on, after 9/11, I learned that the Fremen are a stand in for Muslims, and the rest is history.
