Brisbane company Linc Energy says independent studies have confirmed a major shale oil source in South Australia's far north, which officials have estimated could be worth $20 trillion.

The company says US-consultants have carried out drilling and geological and seismic surveys around Coober Pedy.

Linc Energy holds rights over more than 65,000 square kilometres of land in the Arckaringa Basin and started explorations in 2008.

In a statement to the Stock Exchange, the company said reports from US-based consultants indicate underlying rock formations "are rich in oil and gas-prone kerogen".

The company says up to 233 billion barrels of oil are estimated to be trapped in the shale.

Just for some clarification as lot of the news reports are very misleading.

233 billion barrels is a very optimistic estimate. That's one of the engineering firms 'best' estimates while the other firms 'best' estimates is 80 billion barrels. which is a pretty lol huge gap in numbers. This is also based off of very early results so who fucking knows how much it could be. And they haven't even tested a single horizontal well. And there are no vertical well test results shown anywhere (as far as i can tell, it's not posted on their site or their press release). Obviously they want to keep some things confidential but to have a public company provide no information regarding how they got these numbers is fucking strange.
It's still a huge find nonetheless but will more than likely be no where close to 20$ trillion dollars worth.
And that infographic is pretty lol worth because most of those reserves listed are proved and conventional. The Arckaringa is an unproved unconventional oil play so making this sort of comparison is pretty ridiculous.

What am I trying to say is Australia will never be a self-sustaining petro-state and Mad Max will happen and you will all die.
