Do you think adultery should be punishable by death? I do. What about some other hot topics in Islamic Jurisprudence:

- Women receive half as much inheritance
- Niqab is fard
- Women's testimony worth 1/2 as much as a man's
- Only Muslims may be considered full citizens
- 40 to 80 lashes for drinking alcohol
- Stoning to death for adultery
- Methods of execution for apostasy can include decapitation, crucifixion, burning, strangling, drowning, impaling, and flaying
- Legalized female circumcision
- Jews and Christians have dhimmi (permitted to live), all other heathen beliefs punishable by death
- All Muslims must wage jihad against Dar al-Harb
- In cases of murder, women receive half as much compensation as men

I can't see what the problem is, the US should adopt the Koran as the sole source of legislation.

40 to 80 lashes for drinking alcohol is way more reasonable than the punishment minority individuals receive for possession of crack cocaine in the US. sounds like sharia is already coming out on top!

Whenever I tell radicals that the majority of Egyptian women support "female genital mutilation" and consider feminism to be cultural imperialist, its like mentioning Eugene Debs to a democrat. They get awkward, like the horizon of their ideology is apporaching and they're about to fall off and look like a fool/racist/conservative.

I don't think there have been enough frontpage articles about how feminism is an imperial force used to justify colonialism and destroy indigenous cultures.

A painful reminder of how far, in the past thirty years, Egypt has emotionally and intellectually regressed. Mubarak was personally responsible for the rise of Islamicism in the Middle-East.

Sorry in advance for the earnestness. This is one of the few personally wounding things to me.

My uncle Sharif was of the first post-Nasser generation to be educated in the Egyptian school system. This is back when Egypt sought to create its own, authentic, intelligentsia. Like his 8 brothers and sisters, Sharif was trained in multiple languages in school. I know for a fact he knew German and Dutch. Another one of my uncles was a fluent speaker of Russian. My mother came out of high school sounding like a native speaker of French and English.

This was all lost.

Apparently my cousin Samir has grown up to be a total religious nut and made my mom eat in another room with the “females” as he and my brother ate together and discussed important matters, like Allah, oil and penis length. Apparently, she was really hurt.

This led to some discussion. I heard two comparisons. Egypt is becoming Medieval England. I was also told that it’s become like (or worse than) Victorian England. Medieval England wasn’t actually that bad for women. I think the Victorian comparison is somewhat better, as the religious fervor of that period was driven by wide-spread nostalgia and a similar paranoia about the secular and scientific modifying religious subjectivity.

Stupid little new-fake “cultural tradition,” one which wasn’t practiced when my mom was growing up in the family nor when we used to visit as kids (I remember when that brat, Samir, was only two feet tall).

So, little brother is back from Egypt. Did my mother have to wear a burqa? No, but apparently our cousin Khalid has grown up to be a total religious nut and made my mom eat in another room with the “females” as he and Ameer ate together and discussed important matters, like Allah, oil and penis length. Now, while I consider my mom a psycho, I actually felt a twinge for her when I heard what happened. Apparently, she was really hurt. This led to some discussion. I heard two comparisons this weekend.

Did my brother do the right thing in humoring Khalid’s stupid little “cultural tradition,” one which wasn’t practiced when my mom was growing up in the family nor when we used to visit as kids (I remember when that brat, Khalid, was only two feet tall)? Or would the appropriate behavior been to have laughed in Khalid’s face, as I would, naturally, have done? It’s sort of a tradition in our family for me to get into a fight, verbal or fist, in the first five minutes of encountering any of my Egyptian born cousins, therefore I’m not exactly neutral. What would you have done? Would you have bowed out and said, “we’re going to go eat and then we’ll come back?” Would you have respected the new-fake cultural traditions even though you are “part of the culture?” I invite readers to judge my brother’s complicit actions.

ameer adds:

Actually, the main issue was Khalid’s wife. She was in the apartment the whole time he was there–a couple of hours–and I never saw her once. When I was in the living room, she was hidden away in the kitchen, and she only came out when we were in the other room eating. If I had insisted on eating in the living room, she would have had to stay hidden in the kitchen the whole time, since it was apparently not okay for me to even see her.

He never mentions Mubarak, who was actually a secular liberal.

http://forward.com/articles/152534/jewish-divorce-caught-in-sharia-law-fight/?p=all
A Florida state bill targeting a supposed threat from Islamic law may instead end up preventing Orthodox couples from using Jewish religious courts, or batei din, to arbitrate their divorces, according to legal specialists and some Jewish groups.

The Application of Foreign Law in Certain Cases bill is considered likely to pass the Senate before the end of the legislative session on March 9. Observers expect Governor Rick Scott to sign the proposal, which has already passed the Florida House of Representatives, soon afterward.

The bill is part of a wave of legislation against Sharia, or traditional Islamic law, that has swept the nation in recent years. Though many of the bills differ, they are largely styled on model legislation drafted by David Yerushalmi, an Orthodox Jew who lives in New York.

Florida legislators introduced a similar so-called “foreign law” bill last year. That failed because of concerns from business and Christian leaders that it was too broad and could interfere with commercial and church affairs.

The new, more targeted bill specifically applies only to divorce, child support and custody hearings in family court. It states that arbitration is unenforceable if a tribunal bases its ruling on a “foreign law, legal code or system” that does not grant people the same rights as the Florida state or U.S. Constitutions.

The bill’s supporters acknowledge that their proposal is aimed at Muslims. But David Barkey, an Anti-Defamation League attorney specializing in church-state issues, said that the bill will affect Jews. Because only a man can grant his wife a Jewish divorce, or get, Barkey said, a beit din —singlular for batei din — may be seen as violating state and federal equal protection principles, which bar discrimination based on gender.

“Any arbitration or ruling based on such a law is, per se, invalid,” Barkey said.

But Yerushalmi said that courts would not apply the bill to arbitration rulings by batei din because these bodies do nothing to violate constitutional principles.

More than 4,000 Orthodox families live in Florida, according to Agudath Israel of America, an ultra-Orthodox umbrella group.

Michael Helfand, a professor at Pepperdine University’s School of Law, said Orthodox couples routinely use batei din to arbitrate divorces. Once Orthodox couples getting divorced set the terms for their separation, such as child custody and the division of property and assets, they may then petition a civil court to make the beit din ruling a binding judgment.

The ADL fears that state judges will balk at such petitions due to the inherent gender inequality of Jewish religious law on divorce.

Like I said, radicals get awkward when this topic comes up. "These other religions don't crucify apostates, but they have gender inequality too!"

In 2003, after four years of design, a Syrian company called Newboy Design Studio introduced a new doll that sparked both controversy and immense popularity. This Barbie look-alike doll was named ‘Fulla’ (Zoepf, 2005). Designed with two outdoor fashions, Fulla wears either a black head-to-toe outfit called an abaya and a black headscarf (marketed to more conservative Middle Eastern countries in the Persian Gulf region); or a fashionable white or light blue long coat with a white headscarf which was marketed to more liberal countries in the Eastern Mediterranean area (Nelson, 2005). Underneath these outdoor fashions in which girls are encouraged to dress their dolls when leaving the house (Nelson, 2005), Fulla can wear a wide variety of fashionable, Western clothes, including t-shirts and jeans (Labib, 2006). While there have been other veiled Barbie dolls and veiled Barbie doll look-alikes developed in the past, such as Dara and Sara from Iran, Razanne from a U.S. company, and several Barbie dolls from the Dolls of the World Collection (Ducille, 2003; Okafor, 2007; Yaqin, 2007), what makes Fulla unique and what led to her vast popularity is the personality that was created for her. Similar to Barbie, Fulla is personified with characteristics popular in the region in which she was developed. However, as Zoepf (2005) explains, Fulla is constructed as a more modest version of Barbie by being typified as a good, modest Muslim girl who is very caring, loving and deeply respectful of her parents. Additionally, she has respectable occupations, such as being a teacher or a doctor, and is usually shown in advertisements engaged in activities such as prayer, baking and reading (Zoepf, 2005).

You wouldn't burn a veiled barbie doll.

http://anti-imperialism.com/2013/04/08/an-open-letter-to-femen-and-the-irony-of-western-feminism/

Like clockwork, another ‘mass’ movement of ‘progressive’ First World political activism has sprung up. This time it is FEMEN, the latest in a series of media spectacles and fad movements which justify and support further First World attacks against Third World peoples.

Despite its English-language messaging, FEMEN claims to represent ‘Arab Women against Islam’ and encourages women around the world to “bare breasts against islamism .” Essentially, FEMEN asks women to write messages (‘Free Amina’) on their topless bodies, take pictures, and post them online.

It is ironic that a movement which uses women’s naked bodies as advertising also claims to be ‘feminist.’ Fashion merchandisers who use half-naked models to sell lipstick and t-shirts are simultaneously promoting patriarchy. The same applies to nominally ‘feminist’ political messaging.

Privileged westernized women may think it is rebellious to use their chest as billboards for this or that cause. However, it is oppressed women who are most likely to be corralled into brothels and seedy strip clubs due to the commodification and objectification of women’s bodies.

And let’s be real: not long ago, western women in Victorian dresses were supporting genocidal ‘civilizing missions’ against half-nude ‘heathens.’ From this perspective, the ‘liberation’ pushed by privileged First World women is a cynical ploy to secure their own aristocratic position within global gender hierarchies.

FEMEN is not an isolated case. Rather, imperialist centers are increasingly utilizing online-media-inspired ‘mass’ movements to create public opinion in its interest.

Anti-imperialists must be vigilant and ready to oppose ‘progressive’ and ‘feminist’ movements which advance the interests of imperialism. But, Muslim women don’t need us to tell them what they already know:

An open letter to FEMEN

Hey FEMEN,

We understand that it’s really hard for a lot of you white colonial “feminists” to believe, but- SHOCKER! – Muslim women and women of colour can come with their own autonomy, and fight back as well! And speak out for themselves! Who knew?

We are proud Muslimahs, and we’re sick of your colonial, racist rubbish disguised as “women’s liberation”!

BECAUSE we are fed-up and tired of hearing from women of privilege perpetuating the stereotype that Muslim women, women of colour and women from the Global South are submissive, helpless and in need of western “progress”.

BECAUSE it is these kinds of colonial attitudes that commit more harm than good, so stop trying to kid us.

BECAUSE we are sick of the appropriation of our terms and our customs, done without our permission for whatever reason people see fit.

BECAUSE we don’t have to conform to your customs of protest to emancipate ourselves. Our religion does that for us already, thank you very much.

BECAUSE rubbing shoulders with far-right, racist and Islamophobic groups is just ANTI-FEMINIST beyond bounds, not to mention EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.

BECAUSE you don’t really care about violence and harm being inflicted upon women, you only care about that when it is perpetrated by brown men with long beards who pray five times a day.

BECAUSE not all of us are white, skinny, physically non-disabled and willing to whip off our tops merely for press attention. Check yourselves before you go into the streets again.

BECAUSE we live in a messed up world, what with heteronormativity, white supremacy, empire, the class system and capitalism, but FEMEN are concerned most about contributing more to a climate of rampant Islamophobia instead. Take aim at male supremacy, not Islam. Your priorities are messed up.

So, next time you decide to take the crusade for global women’s liberation into your own hands, JUST REMEMBER that before FEMEN came along, there have been and will continue to be women all over the world dreaming and fighting for their own emancipation, and WE DON’T NEED YOU!

SMASH THE WHITE SUPREMACIST CAPITALIST PATRIARCHY! POWER TO THE MUSLIMAHS!
