well considering that when Victorians ran England it was a massive empire and now it's a pile of debt and pebbled-dashed dreams i'd say the headline is correct.

Actual IQ scores from different decades cannot be directly compared because people today enjoy better teaching, health and nutrition which would help improve their results, the scientists explained.

oh i see. so the headline is actually meaningless, lol

it's hardly meaningless jools, it's well-crafted bait for people to come share their racist, classist, blimpish moanings on the state of britain today

actually reaction time of skilled gamers is probably far lower than the average (ie better) which is why we are superior race.

hunter gatherers were probably many times smarter than we are now though. like figuring out general relativity when you're in a cosy patent office with your meals brought on a tray is one thing, but inventing the toggling harpoon when you live in a literal frozen wasteland is by far the superior achievement

also raw intelligence probably had more survival value back then instead of resistance to epidemic diseases

In a way, this is correct. There are just as many, probably even more cognitive abilities that have deteriorated as have been selected for. That's the point of selection, some things are chosen and while the rest isn't. However, I think it's undeniable that we are smarter according to the criteria of patriarchy's instrumentalization of breeding. IQ is one measure of this, though not the only one. While it is likely that a different balance of cognitive abilities would be nurtured in a progressive society, it is useful to understand the trends in IQ to quantify the power of patriarchy's selection criteria. Also, to demonstrate when its failing on its own terms, giving one more reason to enforce alternatives.

As ideas and feelings succeeded one another, and heart and head were brought into play, men continued to lay aside their original wildness; their private connections became every day more intimate as their limits extended. They accustomed themselves to assemble before their huts round a large tree; singing and dancing, the true offspring of love and leisure, became the amusement, or rather the occupation, of men and women thus assembled together with nothing else to do. Each one began to consider the rest, and to wish to be considered in turn; and thus a value came to be attached to public esteem. Whoever sang or danced best, whoever was the handsomest, the strongest, the most dexterous, or the most eloquent, came to be of most consideration; and this was the first step towards inequality, and at the same time towards vice. From these first distinctions arose on the one side vanity and contempt and on the other shame and envy: and the fermentation caused by these new leavens ended by producing combinations fatal to innocence and happiness.

Note that leisure is not the sole reserve of mankind. Many tropical birds can frivole away as much of their time as they please at the lek, certainly the vices this passage blames on "ideas and feelings" are shared by all species subject to sexual selection.

this isn't bad reporting or even bad science, it's outright racist quackery

Woodley, primary author of the paper, may be better known for his studies of Sea Serpent Taxonomy.

When he isn't working on taxonomies of Sea Serpents for Crypto-zoology; he is trying to argue that race among humans constitute subspecies.
