cuppin boobs: the gallant history of southern chivalry

“I slowly came to realize that a sizable number were dead serious in their belief that the South should rise again, presumably with all that entails, including slavery.”

Scott continued:

“At the benign end of the spectrum are those that participate because of the re-enactments’ social aspects or those who enjoy firing a replica cannon. I am not willing to let them off the hook however, as they participate in events that routinely include venerations of people such as Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was a slave trader before the Civil War and helped found the Ku Klux Klan after.”

Scott said racism, and a desire for history to have taken a different course, is prevalent during these re-enactments.

“I found a population that seriously entertained the idea that this world would have been a better place had the South won,” Scott wrote. “This population routinely acts out its beliefs in elaborate alternate-reality events, not just re-enactments but also many other public and private functions that combine implicit racism with political magical thinking, ‘If I wish hard enough, the values of the Confederacy will return,’ and with personal magical thinking: ‘Here I am, the dashing Confederate officer I rightfully should be rather than the low-level functionary that I am at work.’ ”

i am from the south and know several die-hard confederate re-enactors

they are insane but i dunno why anyone is surprised that they are virulent racists
man who literally acts out white supremicist fantasies as a hobby is a bigot? omg

i used to know a guy back in England who was a Confederate reenactor despite having no links, genetic or otherwise, to the South. he despised the Sealed Knot society for focusing on the English Civil War and "carrying 18 foot sticks". he came to school in his zouave outfit one time and everyone thought he was andy pandy. he was slightly more popular than me

one of my childhood friends (hes in jail now, like a lot of my childhood friends tend to be from time to time) dad was a Civil War re-enactor, and we always used to steal black powder from his garage and blow shit up in the woods. His dad was also a doctor, a cokehead, had a ridiculous amount of 70s & 80s pornography (which we also stole and hid in the woods), and one time i watched his daughter's 25 year old boyfriend Trent tell him "this is my fucking house" and bow up to him, causing Civil War Daddy to immediately back down like a LIL' BICH

Trent was fucking wahld as hayull back then though, so i kinda dont blame him

Little did she know that Daisy was an OBAMADOG who had been dressed up w/ a little Obama sign literally moments earlier. Owned, Ann. Just owned.

most of the people in my native grotto of the south were actually midwestern transplants so i never rly got exposed to much Full Throated Southern HollerNationalism like reenactments or whatever the hell. one time some teens were hangin out in a parkin lot next to a high school baseball game drinkin beers and wavin around a confederate flag and me and my friend rolled past and yelled cusses at em. thanks 4 coming to my ted talk

Just a reminder that the old antebellum aristocracy of the south (and some neoconfederates now) liked to call themselves Southrons, which also happens to be the name of one of a Middle eastern like race that fought with Sauron in Lord of the Rings.

wow turns out people who spend thousands of dollars on costumes and props to relive a very specific period in american history have an unhealthy fixation with its socio-political context

The guy i knew got slung off a truck he was latched onto while repeated smashing the speeding drivers face through the window, was in a coma for a few months, and when he woke up was a fairly normal, nice guy. His entire personality did a 180 because of the brain damage

t-money, did you know anyone in duval who did the re-enactment circuit? i knew quite a few people at DA who did it and some of them turned out normal (i.e. they stopped doing re-enactments) but there weren't even any important battles in florida so it all seemed insane
