I read the Communist Manifesto for the first time since the 2016 U.S. election and it struck me how far rival socialist tendencies have fallen in light of the momentary revival of "socialist" as a way to describe yourself in that country... The "socialist" and "working class" appeals of Sanders or right trade-protectionism are mostly a tiny loose pile of shards, fragments and broken gears from the demolished reactionary, conservative and utopian projects criticized in the text, while all the stuff at the beginning about how every party calls every opposed party communist regardless of politics was recently acted out on the streets in the most garish and comical way. And, well... that's all pretty good news for Marx & Engels in 2017.

Probably at least my third most rewarding of my yearly readings of the Communist Manifesto, out loud to myself, in a sexy girl voice.

the authorities should find the people at the top of the chain and by threat of force have them clandestinely submit the packages to party review and censorship. so people still think theyre getting something unauthorized and subversive but theyre not lol

also people at the top of the distribution network who dont comply should be arrested and imprisoned

turns out this is called a 'sneakernet'

the permaculture/natural-building type movements have a concept of 'appropriate technology' which the tech sector does not ... something to consider imo

I've also been reading Ceasar's the Civil War and huizinga's "The waning of the Middle ages" on and off for a while now, obth of which i know i will probably not finish

i hope everyone else is busy reading books

i'm reading David Talbot's Devil's Chessboard which I assume was a recommendation from someone here, so far lots of great callouts of WWII era nazi-sympathizers altho I had a lot of whiplash when I discovered first that he was accusing Dulles of killing Kennedy (which is fine but had no idea was a subject of the book) and then that Talbot founded Salon dot com

im reading china mieville's book abt the russian revolution. hes a massive trot but that won't come up till the last chapter
#14541
i really liked the novel revolutionary suicide. very well written.

I'm about halfway through a newish selected Mayakovsky translated by James McGavran. The poem where he talks to the sun and also the anti bureaucratic poem "all meetinged out" that Lenin liked are really good. Unfortunately there are no excerpts from his long poem "Vladimir Ilyich Lenin" which I've been trying to track down in english. I also got the Mieville revolution book but I feel very strongly I will not end up getting to it.

Then you should probably avoid Wilson's book Consilience, because it is all bad chapters outside of his wheelhouse without the good bug ones

imo wilsons theories on eusociality are important, esp when challenging the dominant paradigm of "kin selection", but apart from that he's bad

#14550
Eo wilson is good if you're like, a..... nevermind he's bad. But he's prolific!
#14551
wilson does support group selection as one mechanism of natural selection, which makes stephen pinker extremely mad, so that's at least a little good?

beyond that idk but he seems pretty turdy from what's been posted so far

the "reproductive caste" in insects wouldbe analogous to the ruling classes, in that they seek to reproduce existing class relations

re-reading the classic

Are you following the presidential race?
Not at all.
You’re not? You know there’s a Black guy running, Barack Obama and then there’s Hillary Clinton.
His name is Barack?!
Barack Obama, yeah.
Barack?!
Barack.
What the fuck is a Barack?! Barack Obama. Where he from, Africa?
Yeah, his dad is from Kenya.
Barack Obama?
Yeah.
What the fuck?! That ain’t no fuckin’ name, yo. That ain’t that nigga’s name. You can’t be serious. Barack Obama. Get the fuck outta here.
You’re telling me you haven’t heard about him before.
I ain’t really paying much attention.
I mean, it’s pretty big if a Black…
Wow, Barack! The nigga’s name is Barack. Barack? Nigga named Barack Obama. What the fuck, man?! Is he serious? That ain’t his fuckin’ name. Ima tell this nigga when I see him, “Stop that bullshit. Stop that bullshit” “That ain’t your fuckin’ name.” Your momma ain’t name you no damn Barack.
So you’re not following the race. You can’t vote right?
Nope.
Is that why you’re not following it?
No, because it’s just—it doesn’t matter. They’re gonna do what they’re gonna do. It doesn’t really make a difference. These are the last years.
But it would be pretty big if we had a first Black president. That would be huge.
I mean, I guess…. What, they gon’ give a dog a bone? There you go. Ooh, we have a Black president now. They should’ve done that shit a long time ago, we wouldn’t be in the fuckin’ position we in now. With world war coming up right now. They done fucked this shit up then give it to the Black people, “Here you take it. Take my mess.”
Right, exactly.
It’s all a fuckin’ setup. It’s all a setup. All fuckin’ bullshit. All bullshit. I don’t give a fuck about none of that.
We could have a female president also, Hillary Clinton.
I mean, either way it doesn’t matter. I don’t care. No one person is directly affected by which president, you know, so what does it matter.
Yeah, but the country is.
I guess. The president is a puppet anyway. The president don’t make no damn decisions.
The president…they don’t have that much authority basically?
Nah, never.
But Bush pretty much…
You think Bush is making fuckin’ decisions?
He did, yeah, he fucked up the country.
He act like he making decisions. He could barely speak! He could barely fuckin’ speak!
Can’t be serious. He ain’t making no damn decisions.
Well Barack has a good chance of winning so that might be something.
Good for him, good for him.
