You quoted the Muslim equivalent of Noam "nobody can prove Pol Pot killed a million people" Chomsky. Liberal religionism is inherently dishonest. As actually interpreted all the way back to Mohammad (PBUH)'s time wife beating is allowed in orthodox Sharia.

The Arabic word used in Noble Verse 4:34 above is "idribuhunna", which is derived from "daraba" which means "beat". The issue with all of the Arabic words that are derived from the word "daraba" is that they don't necessarily mean "hit". The word "idribuhunna" for instance, could very well mean to "leave" them. It is exactly like telling someone to "beat it" or "drop it" in English.



The Koran does not contain Michael Jackson lyrics.

Allah's messenger said to her, "If that is your intention, then know that it is unlawful for you to remarry Rifaa unless Abdur-Rahman has had sexual intercourse with you." The prophet saw two boys with Abdur-Rahman and asked (him), "Are these your sons?" On that Abdur-Rahman said, "Yes." The prophet said, "You claim what you claim (that he is impotent)? But by Allah, these boys resemble him as a crow resembles a crow."" (Hadith, Bukhari, vol. 7, # 715)

he's right tho, if the islamic culture interpreted that word to mean beat, which they did, reinterpreting it doesn't make sense and erases their culture. like looking at the part of the bible about sharing each with each and arguing that nonsocialists Christians are doing it wrong doesn't invalidate centuries of tradition.
