"could be," in this case, has nothing to do with "was." the era you're talking about was the most lucrative and culturally pervasive in western pornography's 400-year history, and the occasional vice raid or obscenity suit (to say nothing of extrajudicial feminist protests) did very little to stem the tide. It's true that the contemporary state of mainstream video porn is more extreme in terms of acts presented than in the 70s, but a) it also presents a more professional appearance to the eyes of the state, with mandatory registration and testing and a host of other measures that allow the avoidance of more troubling (and probably more significant) questions, and b) the pervasiveness of mainstreamed, glossy rough porn notwithstanding, significantly more graphic materials have been available within the pornographic industry since its french nascence in the 1500s. This doesn't even account for the historically singular likes of de Sade, etc. The pornographic mainstream at the time contained acts that would be considered prosecutable today in much of the US.

Materials that would make the most hardened punter retch- far more extreme than almost anything legally produced in America- are openly sold over the counter in France and most of Scandinavia. In Sweden this stuff is technically illegal, though rarely enforced, and they still allowed bestiality up until january first of this year. Isn't the other thing that most men get off by visuals more then women. The ones I know aren't posers, in that they actively work on women's issues, and their arguments have fuck all to do with declaring porn okay so that men will become leftists.

The average "pro-pornography feminist" is not a bourgeois prostitute woman essayist/activist but a do-nothing man who wants to read or publish essays confirming his long-held suspicions that it's okay for him to purchase, enjoy and distribute products of rape, and that the left needs more men like him.

I've never seen or heard of a straight man being told to lighten up after getting an unwanted, unexpected sexual pass from another man. all the women I know have a porn story to tell. don't even get me started on lesbians. and if you can't see how porn is like, a super horrific and oppressive thing to all women and girls, I don't know what to tell you. and if you can't share those kinds of experiences with women and girls then don't patronize them and try to have a little empathy. you don't have the same skin in the game. your position of power in society is built on the bones of these women. try and listen instead of figuring out ways to make them tell you it's okay to legalize widespread rape and sale of women, choke your girlfriend in bed or watch (even so-called feminist) porn. thanks in advance.
