“Standard Chartered Bank has established itself in Kurdistan, as well as many other firms. They are going not simply because Kurdistan has theoretically the sixth largest oil deposits in the world, but because the place is an oasis of stability and tolerance. They have a democratic system; they are pushing forward with women’s rights; they insist on complete mutual respect of all religions.”

It's a tough choice between what is worse: the pandering of the Saudi kingdom by the plutocrats and their various committee executives, or the more "populist" Anti-Arab and Islamophobic contempt for any state run by brown people with money.

John Kerry on King Abdullah: "King Abdullah was a man of wisdom & vision."

John Kerry on Hugo Chavez: "Throughout his time in office, President Chavez has repeatedly undermined democratic institutions by using extra-legal means, including politically motivated incarcerations, to consolidate power."

NYT on Abdullah: "Nudged Saudi Arabia Forward" "earned a reputation as a cautious reformer" "a force of moderation"

NYT on Chavez: "A Polarizing Figure Who Led a Movement" "strutting like the strongman in a caudillo novel"

can't help but be reminded of people criticizing right-wing Latin American dictatorships by asserting authoritarianism is a uniquely "Latin" concept or that Duvalier's reign was proof of black inferiority.

uh no? The ruling class is almost unanimously liberal internationalist. The idea that nationalism is anything more than windowdressing in industrialized nations today is ludicrous to anyone who isn't committed antifa/anti-racists, essentially the freikorps of globalization.

haha modern journalism is such a huge fucking failure. reminds me of the first journalism class i went into for college, all of the 17-18 year olds in there were in their pajamas reading shit like cosmo and vanity fair. they were ready to write bullshit like this before they even started their unpaid internship at huffingtonpost.
god what an embarrassment

someone either here or twitter or something said that the media reception surrounding this had the same flavor as that of a revered mafia don's funeral, its a scarily good comparison
