I couldn’t follow everything in this thread but like porn, education is bad: it provides unrealistic expectations of achievement and poisons social relations

You think David Foster Wallace would have killed himself if he’d been born a mechanic in Jacksonville or some dumb scotch-irish 19th century settler bastard?

how could education itself be bad? I wouldn't claim that at all - but our current model of education, and any other model that isn't built around teaching children to take care of themselves and one another, will undermine any ideas of truth or responsibility introduced down the line.

Education is bad because it:

1) Leads people to start questioning things. Once they develop this impulse they keep asking more and more. Ultimately, there are no answers for such questions. Why start people on a road to disillusionment?

2) Wastes time they could be spent discovering themselves…immersing themselves in the material glory of the cosmos and this world….a pure state of “being” and not “thinking” or suffering

3) Clearly perpetuates class and racial privilege

it's hard to find Dorothy Day in bookstores! if you want I can send you some of my favorite of her essays, or those of other Catholic Worker writers. or if you live in a city with a Worker house, you should just stop by for dinner some time; the most persuasive argument for any idea is people living it happily and making sure anyone who wants to can join.

u 2 Impper we love u

there is a worker house here actually (montreal).

the joyful manipulation of ideas (the study of the humanities) debases truth in terms of pleasure,

yep

as though exotic rhetoric were a sustaining alternative to discipline and love.

not sure I want my discipline and love combined as strongly as you'd like. smoke and mirrors is a natural and healthy part of the game.

ideas no longer demand intellectual commitment, let alone action in the world; to think seriously about something is only to play with and profane it.

Isn't that part of the process of becoming truly free - the ability to see through the most sacred and popular ideologies in the profane sense, in order to realize that there is really no inherit meaning to the universe? i'm an absurdist in this sense.

from this, the fear of thoughts of God.

God contains good and evil, form and void. To speak of God as a real potential for structuring lives toward some greater good is a large error imo.

try making this argument without appealing to totally deistic concepts of "freedom", "really" (as in, "in reality"), "greater good" - try structuring any sort of thought without relying on implicit objective truth, whether holy or post-modern.

david foster wallace was a hack and he wouldn't have killed himself if he'd bothered to understand philosophy instead of regurgitating concepts like a seagull ill on meat rinds
