Edit: I am proud of my double post!

Second Edit: No I'm not. Everything has been going to hell lately. I've been feeling overworked and stressed out from my 60 hour long work week in the arsenic factory.I've grown used to the taste of poison, I've grown even more used to not being able to taste things at all, as that's something I've just learned to adapt to. I'll give you guys an update when the leprosy isn't hurting my posting-fingers so much.

aw fuck it

we put together a series of scenarios modelling organizational conflict, with the participants acting out assigned roles and recording their thoughts on what was going on from their role's perspective. the scenarios were built through a process of sharing obstacles and catastrophes that had befallen folks in their own work, the goal being to map out the interconnected relationships of what happens when things go wrong for groups of various compositions and needs, and to build better responsive strategies.

the core data is really the stories that went into building the scenarios, but acting them out helped to explore the possibilities of various motivations, external factors, and alternative paths of action that could have been present, along with some valuable knowledge sharing about what cop/spook disruption looks like (among other things) in diverse settings. next step is going to be interviews and group discussions with the participants and a comparison/contrast of how the scenarios played out vs the original stories.

the goals of the project are kind of complicated, but the simple version would be to 1) create and improve trainings for dealing with serious problems and improve the resiliency of groups facing adverse conditions, 2) reverse engineer cointel strategies to develop feasible tactics for groups seeking to undermine and/or disperse hostile presences with minimal risk (astroturfers, conservative thinktank backed campus "activists" and other spook dummy groups, just plain shitheads, etc) 3) explore and evaluate our own capacity to model scenarios

i got real drunk at the pub last night and argued the merits of communism with a couple of people i never met before. there were a lot of funny moments and things got a bit heated. the best part was when one of them tried to use the old "but weve tried communism and it doesnt work!". i asked when, and he kind of smirked and immediately said "uh, the soviet union??" i said "and tell me, what do you know about the soviet union?" he was forced to admit he didnt know anything about it. then he offered me weed. work sucks this mornikng but it was worth it

sounds really cool.

i bumped in to an old friend today who teaches 'theatre of the oppressed' workshops that might be similar -- were you acting out the scenarios or was it more a thought exercise?

were there any interesting learnings towards the goals you set?

#35
hardcore Nordic LARPers have scenarios where you are homeless for a day or two it's a pretty cool way to learn how shit it is to be poor and feel good about your wealth. and also ones where you are alcoholic and get made fun of/actually abused, basically like BDSM PTSD-inducing LARPing
#36
homeless for a day is utterly flawed ignorant reductionist shit that erases the long term effects of starvation+sleep deprivation+daily abuse on the human body and mind and people invariably walk away from it with a bunch of flawed shitty assumptions, you can preface the exercise by saying that its flawed but if you do that then what's the fucking point?

you could perhaps call it an outgrowth of theatre of the oppressed type work, although a lot of that has been suborned into fancy bougie mainstream academic theater degree wankfests, and are often reduced to being 'just' exploratory. also this project was entirely online so the medium was pretty different. the scenarios played out over email listservs and forums explicitly set up for the task, and focused on an organizational perspective of everyone present as an actor with agency instead of just focusing on describing one persons individual experience as most theatre of the oppressed goes. there wasn't a script to entirely recreate a scenario so much as "these are the events that happen at these points, think about why your role performed as it was described and reenact that rationale." as far as what we've learned, it's too soon to say, just collating all the information is going to be a lot of work
