imho expanding internet access is actually a worthwhile project if done in a manner that makes it accessible to the poor.

its definitely worthwhile project for billion dollar tech companies that can hold the poor captive

I chatted with Liz May for a bit today. she's alright. I would be happy if the greens got some play in a nearly hung parliament

it would actually be more worthwhile to just destroy internet access for the rich and middle class

I was surprised today watching Mansbridge talk to Mulcair, he's still a talking point robot like everyone else but he said "social democratic" out loud at least which at least contains some syllables that are the same as socialism. and also basically said ISIS is not even a real thing and we're out immediately from any middle east military intervention in any way.

less terrible than expected!

Nathan Jacobson nabbed by Toronto Police Fugitive Squad

Businessman Nathan Jacobson has gone from hobnobbing with the most powerful politicians in Canada to a jail cell.

...

Jacobson, who grew up in Winnipeg, has dual Canadian-Israeli citizenship, and until last year had a credit card clearing company in Tel Aviv, Paygea, which processed payments for online gaming sites and adult websites. Israeli media reports say that when the company ceased operations, it left creditors in the lurch.

Jacobson is a prominent member of the Canadian Jewish community and has been a strong backer of the Conservative government. He was previously on the board of the Canada-Israel Chamber of Commerce and the Canada-Israel Committee.

In May, 2009, he was master of ceremonies for a party celebrating the 61st anniversary of the founding of Israel in the West Block of Parliament Hill, introducing the keynote speaker, Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

He has travelled in Israel with Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and is said to be friendly with both ministers.

Both ministers have said they were unaware of his legal difficulties until they were reported by Postmedia News this summer.

Next month, Kenney was scheduled to appear with Jacobson at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, where the minister will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa. Jacobson, who was to be the master of ceremonies, withdrew after his legal troubles became public.

Jacobson is suing Mark Adler, the Conservative MP for York Centre.

In his statement of claim, filed in October, 2011, Jacobson alleges that in 2009 and 2010 he loaned $265,000 to Adler and his Economic Club of America, an offshoot of the Economic Club of Canada, a firm Adler started to provide a forum for high-powered guest speakers in Toronto.

Adler’s statement of defence, filed in January, says that Jacobson provided him with $114,962 in 2009 and 2010 “as a friendly gesture,” and did not expect to be paid back.

In March, Jacobson was photographed with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The photo was taken at a reception in the Railway Room on the evening of March 2, 2012, where about 150 or 200 people gathered to greet the two prime ministers.

From 2004 to 2011, Jacobson donated about $10,000 to the Conservative Party, including donations to the central party and to the riding associations of former MP Wajid Khan, Environment Minister Peter Kent and Labour Minister Lisa Raitt.

He also donated $1,100 to to the federal NDP on election day in 2011.

Jacobson is expected to make a court appearance this week.

meanwhile...

Marcella Munro, Premier Rachel Notley’s suddenly controversial new hire at McDougall Centre, has a surprising answer when asked if she’s against pipelines and the oilsands.

“Me? My BMW 325i is my favourite possession. There is no planet on which I could try to argue against the oilsands. I love all the good things petroleum does for me — including driving too fast on Highway 2.”

Munro defines herself as “a labour-side New Democrat, a jobs-first New Democrat."

“I spent the last six years working with companies of different sizes, including oil and gas companies, to find a path to get to ‘yes’ for major projects."

that's not what labour means lady lolol

a lot of people assume that the unions involved in those sorts of jobs (like construction in alberta) must think as a bloc that anything that threatens those jobs is a non-starter. an organizer told me that it's not even really true because they aren't even good jobs. like you get paid well, and you can maybe save, but you're off in the middle of nowhere doing terrible work and you're probably bored as hell. if you could build light rail to your neighbourhood or something instead you'd take it in a heartbeat. even many of the unifor leader people seem on board with more radical restructuring.

construction unions are a different beast than manufacturing because their work is mostly contract and freelance based essentially imagine an yospos poster but with no education or incentive to care about anything other than their next contract

I did that before. I got paired with a university girl and spent 13 hours avoiding eye contact and instead pretending to study an interesting pattern in the gym's wood floor because we weren't allowed to have our phones to play with. You'll have a great time.

i did it for the provincial election and it was great. the only awkward thing was when my dude called his wife (not legal) and started pleading with her not to do something. then he left and came back 20 minutes later with a completely red face from crying. i realized i either had to get really deep into this with him over the next six hours or i had to completely ignore it and i chose the latter and it was a very good decision and we chatted about shit and had fun.

i am working as poll clerk on election day and did my training today. i'm also thinking about going to quebec during thanksgiving weekend because You Only Live Once. so i voted today by special ballot just to get it out of the way. none of the minor parties are running in my riding so i just voted NDP. i almost wrote in the name mao zedong but i figured it'd make my pro-NDP friends.mildly upset, and i don't hate them. the conservatives will probably win my riding again though because it is rural.

i'm voting in Laurier-Sainte-Marie so i can vote for M-L, the Communist party, Gilles Duceppe... I would actually consider voting M-L or CPC if the candidates weren't hilarious jokes, but they are just confused old men. much like M. Duceppe. who was also a marxoteen, once upon a time, actually.. I like him, he's fighty as fuck, so if the question is really "who do you want representing you in Ottawa" it's him, but it seems like maybe Every Seat Matters so I guess it's NDP again.

the Green candidate is a "stock exchange auditor" who considers himself an "expert in deontology" (lol) who writes for huffington post quebec sometimes (which apparently exists).

good riding.
