have a look at the crank and the rear wheel cog for wear, there's a lot of force on fixed drivetrains and they tend to wear faster than freewheels/hubs. if the valleys of the chainring or fixed cog look wide or the hills look "sharpened" id probably pass on it

will keep in mind! hell yes! ha!

does your ironman have an elliptical shimano crank as well?
#92
I discovered today that the cog or whatever is slipping, I was powering through an intersection out of the saddle and it slipped and I crushed my nuts on the top bar and then fell over. I guess it's jus dirty but I don't have the tools or time to take it off and fix whatever's wrong

the last cog I had blew up and scattered bearings everywhere, I didn't fall off that time but it did give me a scare.

and yeah its got that elliptical crank. I thought it was broken for a long time before I read sheldon brown or someone talking about it.

that's really weird, you mean the freewheel/freehub on the rear wheel exploded? if the chain is slipping out of gear on this new one you've got, theres a good chance you've got a stiff link in the chain rather than there being any mechanical issue with the freehub, so check out the chain first. ive never seen one of those elliptical cranks before, id like to try riding one

LOL PLEAS. you come up to the 801 sometime, you roll through sick lake city someday, and we'll see who's for real.

yeah, the freewheel. it came off the wheel completely, it was spinning free and all the bearings came out.

its not really slipping out of gear, it stays in gear, it's just that if I spin backwards or coast for more than maybe two or three revolutions, if I spin again the freewheel doesn't 'catch' until maybe a half-revolution. which is kind of a big deal. It feels a bit like the gear is missing some teeth but the gears are fine.

yo shennog i got a copy of the barnett manual off some like belgian website and i was amazed, like what, im just getting started and it wants me to learn about threads and greases, theres absolutely no fucking around and i love that

my company bike order got stuck in a backlog so itll be like 3 more weeks, im gonna get in some hands-on on my bro's old steel fframe whatever as soon as the weather gets warm enough again

i have this same problem with my shitty old road bike, but it only happens when it's cold out, which i thought is really weird. no idea what to do about it, but its weird when i am just spinning my pedals and slowly coasting to a halt

it's not imho because all the roads are bad and the drivers are as stupid, possibly more stupid, than i am (extremely stupid in general]. unless you get up at 5 am or whatever, on a sunday, then it might be okay.

If stupid drivers and bad roads bother you then you shouldn't be on the streets, son.

barnett's will absolutely not steer you wrong. if you follow their procedures rigorously you will be a better wrench than 98% of shop mechanics guaranteed. i wouldnt read it cover to cover, just get that steel frame in a repair stand and start adjusting the derailleurs, brakes, etc and read the relevant stuff as it comes up. you prob won't have the tools to need to worry about threading and stuff just yet but the stuff on grease is super important for sure

i havent seen a freewheel that does this before. my guess is that the pawls in the ratchet mechanism aren't engaging properly. afaik theres no way to service freewheel pawls so it sounds like you both need to replace your freewheels, though i couldnt say for sure w/o having a look at em

also that thing about stego's freewheel unscrewing itself is absolutely crazy, that's supposed to be mechanically impossible because the freewheel tightens itself against the hub while you're pedalling. the only thing i can think of is that the freewheel seized somehow and unscrewed itself while stego was pedalling backwards but that doesnt make any kind of sense so im not sure what happened there

I've recovered enough from two back surgeries that I finally got a new bike.

a nice hybrid bike (specialized sirrus). there's something about the position for road bikes i feel really uncomfortable in. also, for commuting the posture is definitely better w/r/t visibility.

they're certainly a compromise but it's comfortable and hybrids tend to fall cheaper than nicer road bikes. (unless you want a cannondale)

west side (where deadken is) is awful. little margin between side of the road and the lanes and traffic is heavy. changing lanes to make left hand turns can be killer.

there's a few places around town with dedicated lanes (i noticed a few places by silverlake on sunset), but it's inconsistent and drivers in the city don't really pay attention.

pasadena is a bit nicer. less traffic, more dedicated lanes, long side streets with no traffic, and rich yuppie types who go biking all the time make drivers more conscious. literally just enough that i can do my commute by bus/bike.

LA isn't particularly flat, actually. some places are (in the valleys) but biking there is a mixed bag and i haven't done it.

biking on sidewalks is suicide with cars pulling out of a lot trying to get viability before making a turn. they literally dont look at the sidewalks.

good to hear you're back in the saddle! that looks like a nice bike, i don't think i've ever heard a bad thing about specialised bikes altho i havent rid or worked on them myself. do you think the more relaxed geometry will be easier on the back? i had someone tell me at one point that road posture is supposed to be good for strengthening your back if you're keeping your back flat, but i don't know if i buy that.

i hadn't thought about visibility issues with road posture before, do you mean that your head position is higher so you're able to see more? i sometimes wonder how the recumbent guys aren't constantly getting creamed, they're so low
