i'm just curious what the market is like for someone with a PhD in d&g who doesn't want to be tied to a specific institution, like what do those people do exactly

More of what I do at the moment, plus some other things. Teaching, writing, exhibitions and projects. I'm interested in the research and qualification will obviously be helpful if I apply for existing things as well as getting funding for the stuff I initiate.

My PhD isn't actually going to be centred on D&G, at least it isn't positioned like that in the proposal.

i used to think i might be b/c i knew my german grandma had to hide in an addict or something near the end of ww2. but it turns out it was because she got in trouble for having an estonian lover (my actual grandpa)... maybe a similar case for you...?

#51
my theory is based on some of my great-grandparents being from an area of what is now ukraine that was overall like 30%+ jewish and also refusing to talk about their past and becoming socialists and such. which is mostly a joke i'm sure they were catholics but yeah.
#52
my girlfriend also thinks she has like some ancient jewish ancestor from ukraine or something like that and so now i'm not allowed to be antisemitic at the dinner table. it makes life hard. a heavy burden.

when i was a small child i got really upset by my friends telling racist jokes about blacks so we had a long debate about it and i came to the compromise that they could tell the same jokes as long as they used the word "paki" instead. a boy's life.

back to the OP, grad school almost destroyed my soul and it had absolutely nothing to do with the work or the difficulty of the material. Do Not Do It.

hitchens had the guts to tell old guys in robes that mutter in latin that maybe their mystical worldview was fictional, blowing a lot of minds in the process.

Don't worry, OP. There is always hope. Maybe it seems like a bad job market, but there are still jobs out there. even if it is a 1 in a million chance, if you work hard and are the best in your field, you can get a job. It doesn't matter who you know, or how good a schmoozer you are, it just matters how pure your heart is and how dedicated you are to your field. Keep fighting the good fight. Believe in yourself. Stand out from the crowd. Never say die.
