Yeah they're definitely the party with the platform I agree with the most, and I'm going to become a member, but I think this just all means I'm a crazy person.

reminder that the ctu leadership endorsed the shit reform legislation that led to this last year. i mean that shouldn't be a surprise but this was new leadership elected on an anti-neoliberal platform lol

really? this is the first time they've struck in 25 years? i thought chicago was vaguely militant or something. the new south wales teachers federation strikes like at least a few times every couple of years, we used to get mad days off all the time when i was a kid

it's been 23 years since the last strike in los angeles and nearly 40 since the last strike in new york city, where teacher strikes are illegal. this is as militant as it gets in america.

the seiu local that provides services for the schools took a contract a few months ago with a no-strike clause fully knowing this strike could happen and now are obliged to cross the pickets for the schools the district is keeping open. it's okay, though, because they're wearing ctu stickers while they scab

lost another strike to bourgeois legality!

At the end of the 2011 school year there were 15,580 homeless students attending CPS schools.36 If all of the 370 social workers currently employed by CPS only provided services for homeless students, each would have a caseload of 42.

A newly-acquired secret agreement obtained in a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) confirms that Chicago Public Schools (CPS) diverted about $70 million, largely from teacher salaries and unemployment benefits, to avoid paying teachers a promised 4 percent contractual raise last school year. The money was instead given to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), mostly as payment for services previously rendered under prior agreements. CPS then falsely told the media that these payments were “owed” to CPD, and that CPS “had no choice” but to make these payments.

since when does the city of Chicago give a fuck about FOIA petitions lol
#72
i don't think yall understand. the city is broke. can't afford anything!!

In a study of payment records in police cases since August of 2003 that were obtained from the City pursuant to Freedom of Information Act requests, the People’s Law Office has calculated that the City has paid $63,909,929 in fees and costs to 11 private law firms in 447 police cases during that time period, with $18,895,165 being paid to lawyers to defend the City, Jon Burge, numerous of his confederates, former CPD Superintendents Leroy Martin and Terry Hillard, and now, former Mayor Richard M. Daley, in a series of cases brought by exonerated victims of police torture and wrongful convictions. In the Burge torture cases alone, the City has paid $15,288,388 in outside counsel fees since the City began to finance the defense of Burge and his men in 1988, and has paid $13,010,166 to defend police torture in these cases since 2003.

i feel like if were to ever give a Serious Political Speech i wouldnt be able to make it through with a straight face. like i tried to picture myself giving that speech she's giving and after a few words i crack up laughing and its not at the content of the speech, just hte idea of a bunch of people who gave me money or their time on the hopes that i would be some sort of politician they could believe in and then having to demonstrate this with a few hundred words at a mic is so bizarre and sad, its like being a magician and volunteering shows at a mental hospital or something
#80
or read or write a speech which doesn't use the same word 5 times per sentence. running a national candidate is also a huge waste of time and money/resources. still the best we got in the heart of the labor aristocracy on this gay earth
