that's like anybody though. generally, people are only as good as the world allows them to be.

And they’re often as bad as the world let’s them be, and privileged, powerful positions like doctors, lawyers and politicians offer a scope for malfeasance that far outweighs any gangbanger or welfare fraud.

Doctors are to nurses and EMTs what silicon valley is to a Foxconn worker

the ideological and material conditions in which you live? but yea, kill all doctors and bring back homeopathic medicines and exorcists i suppose. or come up with a system where pharmaceutical companies don't have a disproportionate amount of influence on what medications are produced and how they are distributed/marketed, healthcare is universally provided, and where hospital staffs aren't reduced to cost-cutting utilitarian practices.

even in countries w. universal healthcare hospital acquired infections are the single biggest cause of death with inpatients. of course this doesn't mean on average you're better off staying out of the hospital but among its causes is a fairly simple one - physicians and nurses aren't washing their hands enough

Socialist doctors are good. Nuff said.
#47
in canada doctors spend a lot of money trying to convince the government to privatize the system and raise their high pay. nurses are the ones that fight for public health care. in fact the only way that public health care was implemented was by a social-democratic provincial government breaking a doctor's strike. that is, doctors went on strike to prevent universal insurance.

so I guess this universal healthcare shit is pretty worthless huh

The whole benefit of universal health care if done properly is preventative. i.e. to enable you to spend as little time as possible amongst a bunch of scalpel-wielding butterfingers more concerned with their handicap at pebble beach than anyone’s welfare

to be fair the practice of scientific preventative society-wide health care is just getting its shit together and joe blow who goes to medical school is unfortunately the product of a system designed to pump out diagnosis & treatment superspecialists, not preventative care policy experts, it's a very wide-ranging problem. modern doctors being like engineers is just one symptom

my ex-gf of a few years was a top-notch critical care nurse in the NYC area and wowow the stories. no doctors washed their hands before touching patients pretty much ever. especially very old rich top-25-in-the-us cardiologists. cardiac surgeons. etc. and she usually had to yell at residents to not do incredibly stupid patient-killing things.

most of the really awful things down there were about surgery decisions (yeah, sure, let's fuck around with the heart valves of this 85 year old lady with multiple complicating issues. she'll probably die but man what a neat case!) or post-op care (withholding pain meds from old people because their recovery pattern would be such that they will die out of hospital instead of in-hospital which lowers your scores). and you can yell at doctors but in the end you do have to follow their orders and procedures and you're usually prolonging agony or causing it and it's just such a fucking awful nightmare. cracking people's chests open so they don't suddenly die due to cardiac tamponade. i'd pick her up from work and be like "hey, i got you one of the bagels you like," as though that somehow makes 12 hours surrounded by torture and death totally fine

Cuban doctors love people you know why? Socialism? nuff said much?

Edit: American doctors are fuckin retards because? Oh thats right _CAPITALISM_. I have like five retard pre-med friends, and they'll do just fine. The biggest retard of them all is at Harvard medical school

the US has a special program designed to try to entice cuban doctors to defect. apparently a few thousand have done so. like the US deliberately tries to undermine 'doctor diplomacy' by going around to doctors stationed in venezuela and shit and being like "hey come to miami and we'll give you ducats"

this is a valid point

the idea that ideological commitment can outweigh material riches is about the most anti-materialist thing i've ever heard

At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality... We must strive every day so that this love of living humanity will be transformed into actual deeds, into acts that serve as examples, as a moving force.

Israeli Exit Poll: (Parantheses: compared to 2009 seats)

Netanyahu coalition:
Likud-Yisrael Beitenu 31 seats (-11 seats)
Shas 12 (+1)
United Jewish Home 12 (+5)
United Torah Judaism 6 (+1)

Centrist parties:
Yesh Atid 19 (+19) - New party.
Labor Party 17 (+4)
Hatnuah 7 (+7) - Livni's split from Kadima.
Kadima 0 (-28)

Left parties:
Arab Parties 5 (-2)
Meretz 7 (+4)
Hadash 4 (+0)

basically netanyahu's coalition shrunk and became more dependent on the far-right within it. kadima exploded and most of that went to a new centrist party. livni won 7 seats with her new party. labor and meretz did well, probably as a result of the social protests and the explosion of kadima.

this puts netanyahu in a very precarious position because he needs to hold on to his far-right peeps while attracting a centrist partner to make his coalition viable over the long term, since 61 seats in a 120 seat Knesset is razor-thin. the problem is that netanyahu has done a lot to alienate centrists (lol) and the main centrist party now was elected on a platform of getting rid of old style politics.

who said anything about "true revolutionaries" though. We're talking about doctors, or indeed any worker

Minority governments are massively gay

The two party system and the outright winners it produces are definitely something to admire about the American system

the american system doesn't produce clear winners at all. like right now the legislature is controlled by republicans yet the president is a democrat and has veto power. it's all gridlock. the system is designed to produce conservative gridlock.

I went skiing for the first time in like four years on sunday and it was really bad, the worst I've ever seen. we did get snow a couple weeks ago but nothing since then. there were rocks and branches everywhere. subscribe http://wasatchsnowforecast.com/ here to be a complete fuckin tool and stay in the know

which place are you going to ski at?

still got 10 days. I'll just cross my fingers and hope, sitting in 90 degree, 90% humidity weather frantically looking at snow reports is just too lame.

btw steg my gf, a working class asian girl in a philosophy and sociology course full of rich whites at Sydney uni, was getting in a real funk about the privileged perspectives of the texts and peers she's been getting. So I slung her some of your translated essays from workers and peasants and she's really digging them. nice work

I think we're over getting 'leftist points' in this 'community'. i bought it up because it was relevant to how she was enjoying those texts.

anyway no irish people are working class they're all potato-faced labor aristocrats whose intellectual hero is no longer james joyce but joe rogan
