Effectively yes: and western socialist parties have been spending decades aiding the neoliberal project with ‘no-one is illegal’ and ‘open borders’ rhetoric rather than listening to the concerns of working people. Is it any surprise when a proto-fascist party like UKIP who actually listens to these concerns starts sweeping the polls?

What went so horribly wrong here?

#5
well, it all started when gregor strasser lost an internal power struggle,
#6
It’s unpleasant to acknowledge but I think it’s fair to say that the most successful socialist movements are the ones who prepared to throw a group or two of people under the bus.
#7
you would support open borders because you want global socialism.

if the question really was as quick as you promised you would have been able to fit the whole thing in the thread title. voting 1

i've been reading about the UKIP and i think this is an important question? this issue goes to the heart of what sort of priorities first world socialism should have, and what the repercussions might be

not in canada it ain't. people love the shit out of immigrants here. 6.3 million foreign-born in canada and counting.

open borders and the "right to mobility" merely serves to allow capital to uproot people from their familes and communities and drive them into the state of perfectly alienated factory labour forever

this is not actually true among actual working class canadians but they aren't really represented in the canadian media, which is mostly urban middle/uppermiddle class liberals talking to themselves

Level of education also played a factor. Forty-eight per cent of Canadians with a high school education or less felt there are too many immigrants in Canada, compared to 27 per cent of university graduates.

and this is emblematic of the disconnect between socialists and the 'workers' they pupport to represent

And by the way yes I know that Canadian multiculturalism works better than most places, I’ve seen degrassi, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a fundamental plank of the neoliberal project, and socialists who support high immigration are betraying workers and further entrenching said neoliberal project.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Babylon the Whore. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
So that I may exploit their cheap labor!

Also getfiscal I’m not sure how you can talk about Canada being this tolerant land when you live in a city so mind-bogglingly xenophobic that it heavily polices the languages of non-natives on signage.

Not even phoenix or san diego does that.

It would be in my best interests to support ease of immigration because this is the Catholic social teaching and I want to go to heaven.

"Even in the case of less urgent migrations, a developed nation's right to limit immigration must be based on justice, mercy, and the common good, not on self-interest." - USCCB

my favorite thing about immigration and multiculturalism is having friends of many cultures, which enriches my cultural capital and and makes me feel superior to the kid who called me a faggot all the time when i was 10 and who now works in a warehouse in utah and posts pictures of dinners of romaine lettuce and chicken breasts to his facebook

exactly, it's about acquiring social capital to elevate yourself above the working class and create levels of social and cultural distinction that reinforce your economic distinction and make it seem more justified.

#37
or perhaps immigration is a red herring and capital is the real issue

Totally! Like how ‘big polluting industries’ are a red herring for the real issue of capital, so we might as well burn down all the redwood and eucalypt forests and leave our cars running the whole time!
