OK so war in Syria is actually gonna be like a whole thing. Can we sticky this and make it the comprehensive resource for deciding whether we support Assad or blah blah pragmatic answer etc... It's actually hard to find genuinely good coverage on stuff that isn't either some doctorate student writing what his professors want him to say on a blog or some leftist making up their own amateur position based on their reading of some mainstream media or a couple blog posts, whatever.

Anyways I can edit in content ppl post. Put up all the good blogs and links. TIA.

my view on this is that it could turn into world war 3, and as we all know launching a world war during these austere times would be a great boost for our manufacturing sector and also to our national wellbeing

And who are you, the proud lord said,
that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat,
that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red,
a Lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord,
as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

the big debate in the uk atm is about whether we should provide arms to the al-Nusrah Front Free Syria Army

there was no big debate about whether we should provide armored trucks and body armour to them, we just went ahead and did it. this is progress!
#19
this is because the uk and france are gibbering loons, the usa is quite sane relatively speaking

e:

The Russian leader, who arrived an hour late for the talks, said he wanted to help broker a peace deal for Syria, and he hoped the G8 summit in Northern Ireland could advance that process.

~ month earlier:

John Kerry Heads to Russia for Syria Talks

It was Mr Kerry's first trip to Russia as US Secretary of State and he was kept waiting for three hours by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin.

Both leaders looked tense and uncomfortable as they addressed reporters after about two hours of talks, with Putin staring mostly at the floor as he spoke about Syria and Obama only glancing occasionally at the Russian leader.

"Our positions do not fully coincide, but we are united by the common intention to end the violence, to stop the number of victims increasing in Syria, to resolve the problems by peaceful means, including the Geneva talks," Putin said in a slow, half-awake monotone, occasionally drifting off.

"We agreed to push the process of peace talks and encourage the parties to sit down at the negotiation table, organize the talks in Geneva," said the Russian President, as he continued think about of spending a few hours off playing with his dogs at his dacha, completely uninterested at the utterly pointless proceedings going on around him.

Obama tried to lighten the mood at the end of the talks by bringing up the subject of judo, but Putin, a black belt in the martial art, parried by saying the U.S. president was just trying to get him to relax.

"We compared notes on President Putin's expertise in judo and my declining skills in basketball," Obama said. "We both agreed that as we get older, it takes more time to recover."

Putin replied coldly: "The president wants to relax with his statement of age."
