Even if the left wins, which it probably will, NATO is prematurely calling the election rigged and is setting up the machinations for a coup. Whether it happens or not is a different story, but this election is only the first (and probably the easiest) step in the upcoming fight against imperialist aggression.

already CIA black ops are attempting to create a Ukraine-like situation in Venezuela and there's so little we can do about it

my marxist-humanist professor the other day said the word "venezuela" with such disgust the other day, referring to it as an example of how you can't say the word socialism anymore because people think of dictators, that i had to leave because i was getting angry in real life and i didn't want to tussle.

a lot of leftists spend most of their activism openly fighting police and managers backed by PSUV bureaucrats but then vote PSUV which is good and my attitude towards the world generally really

I saw this (in my eyes pretty decent) post by a guy from the UKMT from the awful place, does anybody have any big problems with it? It's Colombia rather than Venezuela, but it's still about the US sticking their nose in, and about how FARC always unfairly gets blamed for narco-trafficking.

ctrl + f = CIA...zero results.........hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

The USA, angry about the rivers of coke flooding into America, pressured the Colombian government to crack down on the cartels. The result of this crackdown was open street fighting between the government and the cartel militias, a wave of urban bombings and assassinations, and, eventually, Escobar being gunned down on a rooftop as the Medellin cartel disintegrated. The rival Cali cartel, which had always maintained a lower profile, survived a while longer, but was decapitated a few years later as most of its leadership was arrested. In the chaos that followed dozens of smaller cartels erupted like mushrooms.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

overall it's fine but obviously the key piece of the story is missing. not sure why.

haha, this sentence from the guardian:

Even if the opposition does gain control of the assembly, their power to improve people’s lives could be severely limited. The PSUV currently controls every branch of government and state institutions.

I wonder how much research the CBC did into this claim that they led with in a story on economic chaos in February:

"A scarcity of condoms has led to a health scare. A 36-pack of trojan condoms costs about $750 online, as much as some iPhones. Venezuela has one of the highest rates for both STDs and teenage pregnancies in South America."

Which means a journalist somewhere thinks it's credible that the average Venezuelan is fighting to pay US$20 for one condom just not to get non-fail AIDS.

Argentina elected the right-wing party, Venezuela will get color revolution'd, Brazil is in political crisis, Fidel has dementia... A good start!

says who? that's terrible news

i traced the CBC story and they were repeating without attribution a CNN story. the CNN story had a string reporter in venezuela go to 8 pharmacies and look if they had condoms on the shelves. 4 of them did, although most of these were the unconscionable domestic brands. from this it was concluded that there was a condom crisis. the reporter then looked on the latin american ebay clone and saw that ono seller had a box of condoms for sale for whatever bolivars, which he then estimated at the sky-high old official rates to come up with US$755 or something like that. the story went viral and a bunch of major economic news websites ran with it as straight news lol.

by the way, the government's actual plan? it's building a factory to produce millions of condoms that will be given away by youth organizations, a move which conservatives in the country are flipping out over. a bishop in venezuela said that the availability of condoms would impose a huge social cost.

Preliminary Venezuela results: 99 seats for opposition MUD party, 46 for socialists, 19 still too close to call. Huge blow to Chavismo.

The socialists have been in power 16 years. The USSR was on its second 5 year plan by that point.

add this to the tally of "failures of social democracy" i guess

Some center-right liberals on my Facebook were sharing a post about Venezuela with some photos that basically amounted to "Look at these Chavistas and their huge bellies and bad teeth... Look at how inhuman they are..." which was pretty lol.

Anyway I hope someone is already writing "Why the Latin left failed". I kind of have some ideas why but I'm too depressed right now and don't want to think about it

i think that's sort of par for the course. in my anecdotal experience, a lot of middle/upper class south americans absolutely despise the poor and are quite open about it. there's not even any window dressing about deserving/undeserving poor... just pure strain classism
