the outgoing leader of the Greens here advocated global government the other day, it was pretty funny.

It would apparently involve a Senate with 1 or 2 people from each country and a House of Reps based proportionally on population. He seemed to think this was pretty progressive but considering he is a Gay Man i would be more wary of wanting to give that power to a population that hates everything you stand for

gay men want to be persecuted. that's why they are gay, it's a vanity thing. i bet that the average gay man votes against gay marriage because they want to be special and cool. but, facts are, they are just losers with cher cds.

I understand the anger against cops but remember that as well as beating minorities they also, for instance, keep our roads safe by cracking down on drunk or dangerous drivers. A highway patrol officer has probably arrived at dozens of wrecks and seen more human suffering then you ever will hiding behind a computer screen.

if i accept the premise that cops do good things that are important to society, why does that mean that i shouldnt be angry at the fact that shocking abuses of power are so common?

Because you extend your anger to all cops regardless of what they've done.

from article abt Pier Paolo Pasolini:

These differences became more overt and came to a head at the time of the May events in 1968. In the violent clashes that occurred at this time, Pasolini was very sceptical of the motives of the student movement, distrusting its class composition and perceived hedonism. He wrote a poem for L’Espresso which took the side of the police, whom he saw as poor southerners, sent to work for the state in order to escape the poverty of the south. He felt that the students should fight the legal and political system, not the sons of the poor. This brought him into major conflict with the left and he was physically attacked when speaking in Venice.

cops are obviously a good idea in theory, i aint care what those mean ol' anarchists say, the problem is that police in practice, like all careers, recruit from as-yet-unmade people with no life experiences, and therefore have no effective selection criteria beyond 'can beat people up/wants to beat people up/is capable of disguising wanting to beat people up'

of course thats the whole idea, you dont want cops with lives and roots in society because they might become human and thus ineffective, which is why we pour scorn on PCSOs etc

That's being a bit obtuse. Nobody here would uncritically accept similar statistics without contextualizing, or at least questioning to what extent other factors make it the case. The response to numbers like this for just about any other profession, much less any other economic group (imagine doing this by race) would certainly not be that a group is inherently and irreconcilably bad

#112
there is no demographic in the united states, by either income or race, that exceeds those self-reported abuse numbers. is that sufficient context?
#113
with good reason, you'd never draw that conclusion from similar numbers that would indicate blacks commit more crimes than whites
#114
correct. on the other hand, if police officers committed more crimes than the general public by a margin greater than any other demographic in the united states, i would in fact draw some fairly negative conclusions about american law enforcement.
#115
i also will not belieb that cops commit a significant number of crimes unless the statistics produced by the judicial system indicate this.
#116
um, no, cops own. let's encourage people with a violence fetish to act out their rage-fueled fantasies by giving them a gun and permission to use it indiscriminately. that's good.

  • Domestic violence is 2 to 4 times more common in police families than in the general population. In two separate studies, 40% of police officers self-report that they have used violence against their domestic partners within the last year. In the general population, it's estimated that domestic violence occurs in about 10% of families.
  • In a nationwide survey of 123 police departments, 45% had no specific policy for dealing with officer-involved domestic violence.
  • In that same survey, the most common discipline imposed for a sustained allegation of domestic violence was counseling. Only 19% of departments indicated that officers would be terminated after a second sustained allegation of domestic violence.
  • In San Diego, a national model in domestic violence prosecution, the City Attorney typically prosecutes 92% of referred domestic violence cases, but only 42% of cases where the batterer is a cop.
