government spending as a percent of gdp was about 44% during the height of the second world war and it's about 25% today. it was widely understood that this would be a temporary situation and really isn't that dramatic compared to today, not to mention the privatized profits and war profiteering that came as a reliance on the existing firm structure. i don't think you can call that "command economy" in any meaningful sense. the Germans had greater industrial controls in the form of cartels but, similar to the US, never really exercised control on the level that the Soviets did and suffered for it. the Soviets' command economy allowed them to actually gear most of their industry for war and outproduce the Germans despite being behind in military production in 1941, being technologically and organizationally backwards in comparison, and losing ground through most of the war.

The news that Obama had taken to the internet's premier Men's Rights Activist meeting place Reddit sparked tweets of glee from internet nerds, proving they are by far the easiest of all constituencies to pander to. All Obama has to do to make nerds swoon is sit at a MacBook like he probably does every day and log onto a website.
Unfortunately, the internet explosion took down Reddit for most of the half hour or so that Obama answered questions, leaving us all crazily refreshing the page to see if all the racists would come out. They didn't, thankfully, though I can't pretend I wasn't hoping that some presidential version of the highly entertaining Woody Harrelson AMA disaster, where Redditors hounded him about taking some random high school girls' virginity, might occur.
Instead the questions Obama addressed were all softballs, as is the case with almost all celebrity AMAs on the site. All the interesting bits came from the novelty of the format. For example, you can see the layers of Redditors' insufferability stacked like fine backlava in these threads correcting a grammatical error in Obama's answer about increasing space funding
Obama's other eight answers were mostly uninteresting campaignspeak, including one decrying the influence of super-PACS. There was a fairly interesting bit about how Obama balances his work and his home life:
It's hard - truthfully the main thing other than work is just making sure that I'm spending enough time with michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store - so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I'm in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 pm - even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. Lessons posted:you're right though that the American and Soviet economies were more similar than the Soviet and German. i remember my highschool textbook using that as one of the points of comparison in their Nazis And Communists Are The Same section but really even towards the end of the war when Germany was losing on two fronts and actually made an effort to gear the economy for total war, they never achieved a system of mass production on the scale of either the US or the USSR. it wasn't really a matter of control though, since the German economy was definitely more regulated and while i can't cite anything, almost certainly exceeded the US in government outlays as a % of gdp by 1944.
Yeah, I don't really know anything about wartime organization of the US economy (although if someone knows a book that does sound like a really interesting topic), but from my pretty-good knowledge of the war-time soviet and war-time german economies this is mostly correct. soviet control of industry was really excellent owing to their industrial bureaucracy being relatively small, cohesive, and strictly subservient to political leadership, as compared to the goddamn mess of old industrial families and scheming managers you get in germany.

the wages of destruction is really good for the nazi side of things, how precarious and haphazard a lot of the war industries were, the weird cartel system you mentioned and the nazi relationship to industry generally (taking 5% of revenue off the top of all large corporations, including foreign ones, as a tax, for example)
