impper's rape book: probably bad.

banning people for defending muslims: probably bad.

most things: probably bad.

good: virtue ethics.

Like Lungfish, I am a former LF poster recently banned from WDDP.

Most of what Lungfish is actually correct. I was banned in the same thread he was, though I had no personal stake in whatever petty argument was going on, and I was quite open with stating that I thought Lungfish was really dumb in the past. (Not even for his positions, as it was occasionally refreshing to have alternative viewpoints there, but because he so poorly understood or articulated the positions from which he would argue.) My ban came about because I found it odd that the LF video game / trans chat crowd would pile on someone for hyperbolically suggesting someone "literally" kill himself, which is something already repeated there beyond the point of cliche. It was especially odd given how funny they find SA mods like Grover or Axe Maniac or Evil Weasel when they capriciously ban people for personal slights.

I should add that despite being a doctrinaire socialist in every perceptible way, and certainly so to the right-wingers that predominate TNE, a large contingent of what is left of LF clearly disliked me. I wasn't particularly bothered, but it did serve to illustrate what Lungfish said about many of the prominent posters really caring little about politics or social theory and instead more about posting in their own weird BYOB with a pseudo-leftist backdrop. I'd long half-jokingly suggested on SA that many LF posters were drawn to Marxism not through any real understanding or affinity to the philosophy but rather because it was something that would be most shocking to their parents, with whom they had typically terrible relationships. (This also explained many of the tired jokes you would see on LF in just about every thread; "kill whitey", pro-forced euthanasia of the elderly, pro-infanticide, blind anti-authoritarianism, etc.; at best they were the rehashed memes of an uncreative person, though they undoubtedly had little if any basis in Marxism.)

There was a large percentage of homosexual and transexual posters in LF, something I never entirely understood, but I also never attacked anyone for this reason. I personally don't believe that the fringe of LGBT 'liberation' is anything but bourgeois jockeying, though I also support the rights of people to have equality before the law and dignity in the eyes of society (for no other reason beyond mutual respect and common decency.) This issue only became a barrier to the forum's effectiveness when it began forcing out good posters who made even perceived insults to thin-skinned LF posters who shared the trans obsession.

Despite the cred that being an Islamic woman who had lived in the West Bank should have with self-styled progressives, this poster was rendered unable to post in the SA-hosted LF and was essentially banned in the WDDP version because she once described a transexual as an "adult convert to womanhood," something that happened only after this poster's contributions had been constantly marginalized and personally demeaned as an "adult convert to Islam" by pro-trans wiseguy atheists. Another good poster posted in old LF's 'transchat' megathread with legitimate questions that would be of interest to outsiders, and the regular posters rather predictably refused to answer. Since going to WDDP, he has limited posting privileges as a result of this grudge.

(I'll also note that I never really kept a tally as to who was gay/straight/trans, or really that much at all on the personal lives of anyone there, so I don't even know how many people in the crowd I speak of are gay, and at the risk of making a bigoted "they're not all like that" statement, there were posters such as McCaine who were willing to respond to and explain positions rather than retreating to the echo chamber.)

Lungfish telling a particular poster to kill himself (the straw that broke the camel's back) may have been rude, but the aghast reaction from the LFers really struck me as disingenuous.

I'm probably doing myself a great disservice by posting here, as I do enjoy LF overall and would like to return, as there are many intelligent, interesting, and funny people there, since the minimal chance I had of overturning my ban has been erased by posting here. Still, it had become a rather boring place recently by embracing its insularity and refusing to acknowledge any hypocrisy or cultural decay.

And so I point out that in most socialist countries (USSR, Baathist Iraq) they had socially segregating schools, and that the minorities in those countries would have viewed forced integration as a form of forced-deculturization.

Did anyone respond? Of course not. The wicked Nazi made a really good point so they moved on to their next attack.

Cracker-jack debaters, the lot of them.

The issue of nationalism or even religion as a tool in building socialism was an interest of mine, and one that led many people to discount my posting as 'contrarian trolling' though every instance of actually existing socialism involved exploitation of these identities, so I questioned why many LF posters were often so quick to dismiss them as reactionary.

The problem with all the LF idiots is they lack a key element for any of their revolutionary ideals, and it's something they loathe: the military.

The military is a historically conservative organisation (sodomy is still considered a crime under the Universal Code of Military Justice, Article 125), and wouldn't put up with their shit.

The fact that they loathe guns is another downfall. You cannot take guns away for Americans, it just won't happen.

I'm not sure of your point. The military, being an organ of the state and an often aristocratic/reactionary one, is rarely on the side of revolutionary forces. It is correct that any actual socialist revolution would require violence that few would be willing to actually commit, but this is a separate issue from anti-military sentiments.

goldsmith posted:

My point is that the LF crew only thinks with one outcome in mind, and doesn't look at all the angles.

Well, when I was there, I often made the hyperbolic flourish of accusing them of a 'hivemind', but (especially on the SA-hosted LF) that wasn't necessarily the case.

If you have a more mainstream viewpoint, I could see how it might be taken this way, but there were always socialists of varying shades, along with some anarchists, libertarians, and social-democrats and other liberals, and even amongst those with similar ideologies there was often an attempt to contextualize an issue.

As to what you're directly saying, I think a better example might be the anti-cop attitude of LF. There is a very strong "kill all pigs/fuck all cops" mentality there, which is partially correct in that it is based on an interpretation of the police as agents of violence on behalf of the state, which in turn acts for capitalist interests. However, even in a socialist society, a police force would be a necessary institution, and blanket statements that suggest any use of police (what about to report child abuse? to report rape? or generally, the right to a safe neighborhood?) is 'counterrevolutionary' is really missing the complexity in the problem.
