Baby girls under the age of one already have the fear of arachnids, according to psychologists at Carnegie Mellon University.
The researchers from the Carnegie Mellon University study showed pictures to male and female infants of the creepy crawlies. Boys didn't react to the photos but baby girls were fearful.
The study leads researchers to believe that women are naturally more afraid of potentially dangerous animals than their male counterparts.
David Pakison, a psychologist, believes that the fear could be traced to prehistoric women. While men were the hunters, women would have been the ones who dealt with the medical hardships of poisonous spider bites.
Women are four times more likely than men to have a spider phobia.
As BBC found, the research concludes that phobias such as the fear of hospitals or fear of flying show no differences between the sexes.
