i like the way that now everyday conversations between middle class folks can now regularly devolve into how protein sources are for building lean mass in the constant quest to square the circle of diets and actually see one past procrastination but no one has actually seen any football or even watched match of the day

i like to wonder if fixations on food and/or physical fitness are in someway sublimation of anxiety over the obvious unsustainability of present civilization, but i'm almost certainly overthinking it.

i prefer class and alienation personally but am always worried the entire psycho analysis lark is a bit of smugness hiding an inability to actually think systematically which is as multifaceted as it is singular

pretty sure people have been obsessed with fitness and athletics since the beginning of history, mainly because it helped us kill animals and each other. sounds like you need to hit the gym instead of over intellectualizing reasons why you don't.

I agree there's a radicalization of the rationality, making it about "health" rather than "strength". but, if you look at the turn of the 20th century, there was a lot of quack medicine involved with fitness (and well there still is), so it's hardly unique to the current era. even more recently, in communist athletics programs, there was a massive emphasis on scientific and medical approaches to athletics. if you look at the east german olympics teams, you can see how far it went. and it's not as if those athletes were wildly removed from the "real world" or anything like that. lot of eastern block athletes were from farming families. i have a cousin that works on my uncle's farm while he studied physical education and now teaches PE at a school while still helping his family out and training himself.

people who train naturally hit plateaus, and when you find your current methods aren't pushing your limits, you look to anything that may help. the truth is that nutrition, supplements, and rest can help people. do most people need the medical minutia, probably not. but, when you start training anything seriously, it can be intimidating, so people like to research and go into in a way to they feel prepared. so people go on online, and read the the writing of the enthusiasts, people who have been training for a while and are using every tool at their disposal to keep pushing themselves, so they read it and feel they need to as well.

i think it's a trap leftists fall into that every social phenomena has to be explained by marxism/feminism/whatever. it's certainly true that the expression of most phenomena is altered by the current power structures of patriarchy/capitalism/etc, but that doesn't mean it's driven by those forms (not that you were saying that of course).

i dont have any problem with being fit i have a problem with finesses complete reconstruction to some absurd untouchable science which transform having a healthy body into a hobby which ironically taglines itself by its insistence on the need to create a new lifestyle rather then as a natural component of the human lifestyle entire sections of our society are losing the inability to keep in touch with and so are trying to pointless monopoloise

also i work with my hands plus have some lumps of metal which i lift when it seems right at home so its all good also when i buy my friday fish and chips i cook my fish at home

this is fair enough if your a sports hero but like your allowed to self criticize your hobbies especially if they are seemingly reflecting a class neurosis in the extent they want you to change your entire life to fit them

the point you made about it being longer term is really good though btw and do need to think about that a bit mbe could link it into the fact capitalism is finally at the point where that level of rationalization has become acceptable but not really sure at this point

why conjure up so much invective about people wanting to test themselves?

I’m sorry but this is classic elitist socialist thinking that alienates people from your cause. Try and have some empathy and see the world through their eyes: spending all your time outside work reading books on the Russian revolution or theory or whatever would be absurd to them, while bettering oneself physically would seem like a sensible and legitimate use of free time.

Oh you go to the gym and exercise? How... practical. *Rolls eyes*

I, on the otherhand, prefer to stay Fat and Gay. In pursuit of remaining as inert as possible, I feed my amorphous body with pizza & Doritos. My autistic mind, anime. I like to stay in peak stagnation, best as possible, you know, incase a revolution breaks out -- a Dance Dance revolution that is, Ha Ha.

My rationale: what use does discipline serve in post-modern cosmopolitan society? When you can just be a worthless hedonist instead? Hell Yeah, Good shit.

#393
staying healthy is awesome
staying disciplined is awesome

giving into the middle class fantasy land of snobby diets and perfect work out regimes devoid of any content except the constant quest to make it the key focus of your entire life is ridiculous
#394
like just be a normal person who is conscious of their health

then you get to do actually normal attitudes such as:
think of food in terms of class terms not ultra rational bro terms
consider healthiness in a context not as an absolute
have your outside activity as fun/hobby and not a constant serious event
not treat working out as something to make up for doing rubbish inside hobbies like computer games

like do anything except be the internet nerd > internet nerd Marxist lineage + bolt on "normality" and try to actually just be part of genuine life

#395
the Middle Class, petit-bourgeois fantasy of desiring foods that aren't comprised mostly of HFCS and concocted by a team of scientists wearing white labcoats, mixing beakers of pink goo, and spraypainting their creations to give the visual impression it's edible food. my god, what bourgeois snobby foods comprised of green vegetables, fruits and non-deepfried chicken breast. such things well above what the workers of the first world are able to obtain, as it is my opinion their diets should be relegated solely to pizza and beer -- immensely more expensive however lacking any upper class connotation. Excellent.
#396
yes, a "normal" person with a "normal life" within the context of post modern capitalist societal structure. yes, that imparts life with more meaning and purpose. a person's hobbies should never be enjoyable and only a testament to asceticism - unless it's a physical test of will, then, that is unacceptable. The worst transgression, a person going to the ominous Gym in search of a sense of community and kinship from a sports team as these things have been excised from the subject-society relationship under capitalism. Hmmm, yes, yes, fantastic and also most importantly: a person should always think of his food in political terminology, calling his french fries freedom fries.

your utterly missing the point

the problem is not with the food itself its with the snobby attitude around it which completely misses class analysis of food and instead posits ultra rational HEALTH HEALTHY HEALTH crap devoid of any concept of how people react to alienation, prices, inter class cultural attitudes towards food etc

this seems like nonsense

like its really common to be sociable and friendly and you have to live in such an odd little world for that not to be true

this entire post modern blah blah is a broken zizekien stereotype to justify the wank analysis of petit bourgiouse anti socialites about the functioning of society as some completely broken mess because they are either to above/ignore the actual working class and just get slotted into the rubbishy ultra alienation of the middle class

like seriously just go join a local community sports team its not even difficult at all

#398
also it is fine to go to the gym since its clearly a specialised insitution for helping augment everyday life with fitness equipment its the ridiculousness of gyms for gyms sake ad infinitum towards the quest of perfect health devoid of social context which is ridiculous
#399
it is not fine to go to the gym. the gym is counterproductive to developing a healthy and sustainable pattern of exercise. instead people need to examine their lives and eliminate the conveniences that help them avoid exercise.
