I was reading recently about Norfolk Island, formerly a hellish penal colony off the east Australian coast that you got sent to if you really fucked up. Many of the prisoners were (predictably) Irish Catholics and wanted to leave their dismal existence but wouldn’t suicide because of their faith. So instead they drew straws, one would submit to being stabbed to death by the group and the others would all hang for it, free at last.
