Well to be fair also, the rhizzone currently isn't a very rewarding place to write anything substantial at all. like a bunch of upvotes are cool, sure, but when we are effectively just writing open letters to each other there is a really sore lack in critical discussion or commentary that could help develop our ideas. And this has an unfortunate side effect of putting us effectively in the position 'fiskers and jools have both struggled with, rather than taking part in some kind of discourse we are basically just writing longform blog posts met with not much but an accumulation of "likes" like this is tumblr or whatever. like jools wrote this really substantial piece and i am pretty sure he met with more critical engagement just throwing it up on scribd and linking to it on twitter than in a forum that is ostensibly on some level based around the discussion of these subjects. both of us have written quite a lot of stuff for this place but if it mostly just amounts to writing a glorified blog post in a place that has a much narrower reach than an actual blog might, there just isn't much impetus to keep writing. i mean, i don't want to be a Blogger or a Writer in the first place! which is not to say it's not nice to have a place to flesh out ideas, posting longer stuff here has definitely made me more confident with my ideas, also it's a cool place to post jokes and talk junk with internet pals. but i think a reluctance to post much more than that is pretty reasonable

it's thoughts like these that make me want to go party with Ned Ludd and Ted Kaczynski, I think there is something unconscionably, humanly wrong with this boiling away of a person's grounding in physical reality, of actual emotional connection to other people, leaving behind this cybernetic stimulus-response to porn and cat gifs and tweets and interests and tumblrs

it makes me want to scream a little. probably because I have been inside of it myself for so long, and lately when I try to pop my head up for actual physical air everyone has their own heads buried in ipads and laptops and tablets and I look around and realize I am trying to get away from it too late, everyone else is already in.

It used to be that you could call out a piece of filthy propaganda for what it was. If the Soviets or the Chinese were putting out ridiculous information about how great everything was, nobody felt too bad about calling it out. If the Nazis said life was never better in Germany while the Red Army was beating down their door, we knew it to be horse shit. Yet today, calling out articles such as those in The Spectator or putting down books like Thomas Friedman’s “The World is Flat” is met with groans and rolled-eyes. Our eyes are glued to our smartphones with the world collapsing down around us. Things are actually getting worse for most, though far better for some. Of course, those who are benefiting from the status quo also happen to own all the newspapers, happen to take more part in bankrolling research at universities and also have more influence in government than the guy who is living on $2 a day.

one thing has always remained constant throughout history: when reflecting upon history past through rose tinted glasses, the four words "it used to be..." are always followed by an historically inaccurate assertion

i was thinking about what was posted before and connecting it to academia and how i find it really hard to participate in work/study/life stuff because of panic and such. academia is sort of part of this whole system of punditry-as-action because if you look at the lists of contributors to left blogs they are often filled with grad students, young professors, recent graduates of top schools, NGO researchers and so on. i want to learn a lot more, i want to teach things to people and to do structured research that directly ties to activist problems and so on, but i'm really wary and uncomfortable with school. i'd love to have guidance on research projects and such, and a sort of friendly discipline with that, but i'm not sure i'm a good fit for a grad program any time soon.

what occured to me though is that i could start to build a sort of voluntary structure into my life by making commitments through other sorts of activities. for example, there's an annual university conference in my city that brings together undergrads and community researchers/activists where you can give a short talk (15 minutes) to present a short paper on a research project. what i was thinking about doing was talking about socialist planning briefly, but structuring it as a sort of "terms of a project", like, this particular project would be the first steps of a longer-term personal sort of thing about socialist economics. and i could get feedback from people about that through this and sort of use it as an excuse to structure my time a bit. and after that i can figure out next steps and move on, looking at other alternative/radical things i could talk at, or joining/starting a community reading group about something, stuff like that. i dunno... ~ideas

if you don't get how the trenchant and cultish defense of zizek from people who haven't even read him is intimately connected to mental labour pyramid schemes and the weird dishonest intellectual formations that result then i dont know man, i just dont know

haha please, please show me what the hell you are talking about

i'm wondering why the need for snippy resentful remarks about phantom fail tards that dont exist?? Little Other much??
#131
i dont think theres anyone here who slavishly defends zizek without having read him. some of his ideas are useful, sometimes he talks nonsense, we can take the good and leave the bad, philosophy is a toolkit, an insistence on the paramountcy of personality is profoundly anti-materialist
#132
i used to think philosophy was a toolkit but now i think philosophy is a dane cook cd. you throw it on the old discman and you laugh and laugh and tell your friends "remember the 'fuck bees' joke" and have a great time with cool people. not sure what i mean here but it feels good.

So? no-one is forcing you to look at the screens, show some personal initiative and responsibility. IF you feel uncomfortable then why do you have to act like somebody else around everyone else? When you're trying to watch your back rather than relaxing, participating in some effort to fit in and "be cool" then you end up looking like a fool. It sounds like you're trying to make your life excessively complicated, acting like everyone else is obviously just going to make you frustrated. You should know by now that life is like this.

"You're bat shit crazy and need serious mental help."
Wow, did you seriously just use the term “batshit”? Do you even know the history behind that phrase? Do you know the amount of suffering and oppression that bats went through after their natural habitats were invaded by humans? They were forced to take shelter in church bell towers not knowing that when the bells rang their sensitive ears would be mutilated by the intense sound. Their wails of pain and frantic attempts to escape are how the term came about. I don’t take the suffering of any fellow kin lightly, and frankly I’m disgusted that you would use such oppressive language on my page. Check your privilege.

thanks for stopping by

Emperor George Bush XII: I know it's awful, but what IS it?
Viceroy Original Gangster Koch: No, you absolute Bumba Clot! I'm telling you, it's offal!
Emperor George Bush XII: I agree, it's the worst! But cease the Playerhate and tell me what generates their stench!
Viceroy Original Gangster Koch: Foolish supreme lord of the United Remnants of America! The thing which causes the stink is, itself, offal!
Emperor George Bush XII: So awful that you can't tell me what it is?
Viceroy Original Gangster Koch: I am telling you, it's the resounding reek of the endless smears and stains that come with a lifetime spent in the depths of the Ministry of Sanitation!
Emperor George Bush XII: What sort of smears?
Viceroy Original Gangster Koch: Offal smears.
Emperor George Bush XII: Idiot! See how you like me invading your fiefdom and waterboarding your citizenry! Perhaps that will get the answer from you!
Viceroy Original Gangster Koch: Here we go again!
