the rcmp did that to the inuit because they couldn't understand their names. when they wanted to settle a group of inuit they'd literally abduct the children, number them and put them in a school run by whites, and then tell the parents if they wanted to see their kids again they'd be settling down in places like rankin inlet. when the parents came to get the kids it was like "oh you're 3465's parents? congrats you're now 4837 and 4838".

the incredible thing about it is that an inuit name in a lot of ways identifies who the person is to the community. so like when a child is born the parents dont name it, they consult w/ the community who as a whole decide sth like, hmm, this baby has the spirit of that person who was really good at hunting, or a really good leader or whatever, and name the baby after that person, and then they'd raise them to be that person. so replacing names with numbers is among the most extreme forms of cultural violence you can inflict on these people and they did it because it was easier to write down in a notebook adsfgafgfadhg
